Rocky Mountain Cummins building a new facility in Phoenix area

Well I just GOT MUTED ON DTR!!!!

Noted in Motor Trend: 2007 Toyota Diesel HD Quad Cab = 390 HP / 700 Ft Lbs. Tq. To be built in Texas. Whew!

Any more info out there?

That is good power and torque. Will it be in heavy duty body or a wimpy standard Toyota body?

Years ago, Toyota put a small isuzu diesel in a limited number of pickups. Very good little engines at the time.

cool!! should be a dependable engine, any word if the torque will be on the low end of the rpm spectrum? :)

but, by then our "little" cummins will be at 400+hp & 750 ft-lbs+. twin turbo's etc. :-laf

I reported that story several weeks ago, but it's nice to hear others confirm it. How about that V-8 and V-6 CUMMINS diesels, yes Cummins has them and yes they were quoted not long ago as saying, they would never offer a V block configured diesek engine. Sounds like someone ate a little crow. I hear they are very quiet and rev up to 5k! And just think of all thoes ney sayers , who say real diesel engines are In-line. I smell a whole new bread of diesel powered cars, trucks and suv's, just wonder which brand will it be?? Ford is the only name brand that has publicly stated they will have a 1500 or 1/2 ton diesel truck by 2006. Sure would be nice to have a Durango with one of these little guys under the hood, the V-8 Cummins diesel puts out about the same HP as the Hemi.

Any idea on the engine configuration, a V or in-line? If toyota does this, you know darn well most all of the bugs will be worked out, if it has any at all. Had several Toyotas, best vehicles mechanically that I have ever owned. My Dodge is neck and neck, and hopefully gives me the same reliability the Toyotas gave. Unless of course I bomb it to death. :D

Been there done that with Yota

Just for argument's sake, I'm not convinced that Toyota is producing the same quality they had back in the mid to late 80's. I had 4 Yota's from '86 to '04; 86 4Runner, 95 4Runner, 97 T100, and a 00 Tundra. Each one had decreasing amounts of quality as compared to each other. The 86 was the tightest for the longest period, needing a TPS and a head gasket in 150K. The 95 had the typical rear sag but was tight until about 60K when the sunroof started rattling and bumper rusted. The T100 had the typical vibrating hood, a howling rear end, and a weak sister tailgate (folded it up removing a snowmobile out the back). Traded it in at 100K needing the timing belt and water pump. The Tundra was almost had me satisfied until I towed with it. The paint was very sensitive to little rocks, the rear seat was poorly designed, no pockets in the seat backs, bumpers were paper thin and also rusted easily and the only bomb was a TRD SC. The more US content the Yotas get, the seemingly less "Toyota quality" is passed on to the consumer. The one benefit on a Toyota is the high resale which recovers some of the higher initial investment. After being bitten by the new model bug for my 04. 5, I am much more wary on new offers until they have had others mature them. Toyota is playing catchup for a larger truck and may accelerate the introduction of the diesel a tad before it's ready. YMMV

Rkerner,

I guess we will have to wait and see. I always had good luck with my Toyotas. But, I went with the in-line 4 cyls for the sole reason of longevity. I knew of the problems that may crop up with their V6. I just sold my 2000 Tacoma, kinda wish I had kept it. It had around 90,000 miles on her and was still in great shape, sheet metal and drivetrain. Wanted something bigger, Dodge was the only in-line in the bunch, so that was a no brainer for me. I did look at the Ford, still not sold on the V8 gasser design. Used to do allot of engine swaps of those old GM V8 deisels, not a good design for a diesel. And I don't care who makes it, I would not want one.

Besides, Toyotas move into the diesel segment might put the fire under the butt of the big 3 to offer more diesel choices. I hope Toyota makes it an in-line and stays away from the converted V8 gasser model. That would probably keep the price down too. We will see.

Vs are alright if the right person builds them. Not that I would want them. I love my inlines.

I have scoured the net and have been unable to put toyota and isuzu together. Any links on this engine.

I can see a V design diesel in a car. As was stated in a similar thread, the V's take up less space. But they are not pulling the kind of weight we are with our trucks. A car weighs what, around 4-5,000 lbs? Our trucks are around what 7000+.

Still not sold on the truck V8's, I'll stick with the 6 banger.
