2008 Engine idle up feature

My 2006 has a head temperature sensor that when idling in cold temps, if the head temp drops it wil increase idling rpm's. I know a guy with an 08, the dealer says this feature is not on 08's, I say wrong. He was fueling in 28' temps with engine idling and all of a sudden rpm jumped to 1000 rpm. He said it never did it before. I say he never noticed, or maybe a reflash enabled it as I have heard it is a dealer activated option. I think guys are mixing up 2 conditions. To manually increase rpm's yes, that is a dealer enabled option. The automatic idle up feature is a Cummins factory item, head drops in temp and idle up feature generates heat so that there is no fuel washing on cyl. walls.

mine is an '08 with 68 RFE auto/six..... i had the fast idle enabled at this past May Madness Rally,at Saietta-Trudeau Dodge for no charge!!!... works just fine by the way... ... tom

You are certainly correct about the '06 fast idle programming. My '06 had the driver initiated fast idle and, also, the ECM controlled fast idle when ambient temps were below freezing.

I can't confirm or deny yet if my '08 cab and chassis has the same ECM activated fast idle. I ordered it in January, took delivery in March after temps were already mild in West TX, and although we have been experiencing some cold mornings in the past several days I have not observed a fast idle mode activated by the ECM yet. I would expect it to be programmed to fast idle as you stated above.

Hi Tom Sweeney..... yes, but if your truck is idling in cold temps, the engine temp will drop. i am referring to your truck automatically increasing rpm to 1000 to help the engine get warm again. My 06 does this.....

My 07. 5 does it... so I'd hazard a guess to say the 08s do it as well. I was in Longmont CO last December for a couple of days. It was COLD. I got the truck started one morning and as I was letting it warm (had the e brake on too) I finished securring my camper and associated gear. The truck automatically increased the idle RPM a few times. It would go up for a while, go back to normal, then go back up.

I think I remember that there is something in the owners manual that says this will happen.

My 08's owners manual says it will do that automatically. Haven't experienced it first hand though.

Had the high idle enabled (last month) on the 07. 5, works great in conjunction with the EB. I have noticed last winter that it would idle up to around 950 -1000 RPM's by it's self. It will also idle up in park and activate the EB if it idles for a while, passive RE-GEN I believe. But the high idle feature sure is great.

I just got my '08 last week up in Wisconsin ( I live in Illinois) and from the moment I started it, I believe it was 25deg that day, the automatic hi-idle worked as advertised, just like it did on my 05.



What is involved in activating the on-demand hi idle? I read somewhere with my 05 that when enabled you have to turn on the cruise and manually set the throttle then activate the cruise. Is that still the case?

Turn the cruise 'on' and hit 'set', it will go to 1100 RPM, If you want more press and hold 'set' and press 'accl'.

I haven't needed to see how far it will go bu it does go to 2000 RPM. Of course it must be in 'Park' to do this.

All that is required is to turn on the cruise control and hit set. If you wish to bump the idle rpm up all that is required is to press the "accel" ie top button on the right side of the steering wheel. No need to press set again.

The fast idle feature works exactly as the speed control does at highway speed.

The user controlled fast idle must be enabled with the starscan. Go into ecu view,then ECM them Misc options then scroll down to enable features,hit enter then hit enable,then finish. Unless you have a manual trans... ... ... .



Install clutch up-stop switch P/N 05026273AB. This switch is also called the "Switch - Clutch Interlock / Upstop". Most trucks do not have the 6-way connector included in the dash wiring harness. The two wires are un-terminated. The matching connector for use with the switch is P/N 05102412AA. This connector is not included with the switch kit and must be ordered seperately.

Bob does the C&C w/G56 not need any thing , for I had mine turned on with out the P/Nxxxxxx? Do you know of the difference, ie C&C vs reg truck or with PTO option when ordered?

The C/C's are very few and far between down here. I haven't had to opertunity to play with them enough.
