2008 with 35,000 miles on it, at 20,000 miles engine light came on. Dealer said he cleaned soot out of turbo. I know there is a bulletin on the dealer doing it but is it possible for the shade tree mechanic to perform this.

bet you'll be getting a new turbo in the upcoming weeks

they cleaned my '08 back in august '09; ran a few cans of cleaner through it as it sat in the shop ideling through 1/2 tank of fuel. Then in sept got a new turbo @ 21. 5k - only 3 days in the shop for the new one... . should have deleted as soon as got the new one but still stock... . maybe can get another one on their dime before year 5 yr warranty expires... suppose the latest flash up'ed the soot limit so they won't have to put a new one on again - will see

good luck

During the cleaning process they (the dealer) was to install a port in the side of the turbo. . This port was to be used for later cleaning if it was deemed necessary... There is a good tech bulletin on this.

The dealer now offers a chemical in a can, (you need 6) that you connect to the threaded port and follow the instructions...

One of the key issues here is to keep the exhaust brake on all the time. . the brake forces the use of the ring inside the turbo and will help prevent build up... as every time the exhaust brake comes on, the ring has to turn, thus knocking off the soot...

BTW - my 08 5500 now with 110K miles has been great... . but we drive it like we stole it...
