Just made a 19 hour hop and at the end the transmission went into forth and would not stay in drive. I made two previous stops no issues. The last six hours was at 82 mph in Oklahoma. The truck has no adds or deletes, no codes or warnings. I shut it down for ten min and restarted and seems to be working in the hotel parking lot. Is this normal? I am on my blackberry I appoligize for typos and poor grammar in advanced. Any thoughts would be nice. My email is -- email address removed --. Thanks. Kip

I think we need more information to help.

How do you know the transmission stayed in 4th gear range? What was engine rpm @ 82mph? I would think it would be at or very close to redline @ 82 in 4th gear.

Were you towing a trailer and running into a strong headwind?

Was the transmission hot? I think I read here that the new pickups will show an alarm, and perhaps downshift to 4th/direct if the auto transmission gets too hot.

The truck operated fine at speed. No trailer. The engine was at about 2100 rpm. It was only after we stopped at a light that the gear indictor said it was in fourth like I had manually taking it out of over drive. I drove a couple of miles at about 20 mph and the. Rpm were 1600. I tried to put it into park and back into drive and it indictated fourth. It was not until I shutdown he truck for five min did it stay in the overdrive. It worked fine in the parking lot. I will see how it is on the road in about two hours. Kip

Hmmm, that's odd. 2100 rpm at 82mph would suggest it shifted up into sixth gear normally.

1600 rpm at 20 mph would suggest it was stuck in 1st or 2nd gear, not 4th.

Sophisticated electronics and computers can occasionally do unexplainable things.

If you get the strange symptoms again I would try stopping, shutting off the engine, then restart and try again. If the phantom problem remains, stop again, shut it off, remove both battery ground cables for a minute or two to allow the computers to reset themselves, then reconnect the battery cables and drive it again.

Probably nothing to worry about. I'd bet the truck will cure itself. Let us know if it doesn't and we'll try again to offer suggestions.

Pulled the codes with a scanner. P1776. Solenoid switch valve
Under that code is the following information (calculated load 35 percent), (coolant temp 185)
(engine rpm 1484) (speed 30 mph). Kip

The code and description leave me shaking my head. I don't know the meaning. Perhaps a knowledgeable Dodge dealer tech familiar with the codes can decipher it for you.
