I have a 2010 2500 HD 6sp Auto crew cab and the steering column shifter is stuck in park. IT has gotton progressively worse. Initially, it was intermittant, but now it will not release with wiggleing as it usually did before

I had a friend that had the same problem. It was due to low vacuum pressure I think and it has to have a certain amount in order to move a pin out of the way to shift. It is a safety issue so that if your pressures are to low, you may have braking issues with minimal or no power brakes, so it won't let you shift it with the low pressure.

Thanks for the heads up! I wondered about that type of thing, but the brakes are rock hard. truck only has 5600 miles. I did find that there is a cream colored lever visible if the boot is removed and even though it is very flimsy, you lift or depress it and the shifter will unlock. At least I got a way to get it into gear to drive to dealer for repair. Thanks!

I thought they did away with the vacuum pump on the newer trucks... hmm

Tbryan: I got a recall notice for my truck-- they say theres a fault with the 'key slot' which could cause the truck to be shifted out of park without the key in. Maybe this is related? My truck was built in 2/10

That exact symptom showed up on my '06 when it was only three months and 36,000 miles old.

It was caused by a cheap Park position/foot brake interlock switch, the one that requires us to press the brake pedal in order to move the shifter out of Park position.

The interlock switch can be found about 1/2 way up the steering column, above the service brake pedal, mounted on the steering column. It is a crappy little switch with a pin sticking out of one end (the interlock) and one or two wires entering the switch. Simply remove the bracket that holds it in position and zip tie it out of the way under the dash until you get around to replacing it.

If the interlock switch is physically removed so that the pin doesn't block the shifter from coming out of Park it doesn't hurt anything, just removes the requirement to step on the brake in order to shift out of Park.

Removal probably violates at least 13 federal laws and will cause at least four federal bureaucracies to come after you with penalties for endangering children on school busses and tree huggers lying on trails.

Just a bit of my anger at the federal government leaking out.

If we ever stopped and added up all the inconvenient little things in our daily lives that have been forced on us by a braindead federal agency we would probably revolt.

The interlock switch that forces us to place our foot firmly on the brake before pulling the shifter out of Park position is just one of them. I suppose it was a good thing many years ago when our gas engined cars and trucks had crude carbureted engines with chokes and a fast idle circuit to keep them running until warmup was complete. Those vehicles would lurch forward or backward when pulled into gear.

Modern computer controlled fuel injected engines don't do that. After the Park interlock switch on my then new '06 Ram failed in early '06 and I learned that the interlock could simply be disabled I left it that way. One of the first things that was done when I bought my current truck was to remove the Park interlock and zip tie it to the column. If I want this truck to be in D or any other tranmission position I simply pull the lever. Nice.

I second that, Due to living in the communist state of Calif, Really, they will chase you down for this one!!!

Following on the federal idiots I saw on Bryan Williams 6:00 news that because the fed dumb dumb's, GE is no longer going to make the old fashioned light bulb that we all have been using since it was invented. Plant is going to close in Nov. Suppose to be all the CFL or CEL or what ever that is more dangerous to humans & cannot be put in dumps in US. Suppose to take affect in 2014. Progress.

I think it's mostly the lawyers. John Stossel did a show years ago about all the ridiculous warning labels on just about anything you might buy today. They said that so many are so absurd that most people don't even read them anymore.

He actually has a post for people to give examples of warning labels on products they have bought, which means that for every label on a product there has been at least one lawsuit for some dumba** who rather than take personal responsibility for their actions would rather sue to get rich quick.

What wacky warning... | Facebook
