Buying a Duramax

stanadyne vs BG ?

Went yesterday with my mother to look into getting a diesel SUV. She has a BMW car now, but has been looking to get back into the diesel world after driving my Liberty when her car was in for repair a while back. We looked at the BMW X5 but she did not want to spend $60k on a vehicle in this economy so I suggested we see if they had a Volkswagen Toureg in stock. The price was better, at $45kish for the TDI V-6 3 liter, but they did not have one in stock. The gasser version was only rated for 14 mpg!

I told her I had friends who have Jetta TDI cars and love them. I test drove one when they first came out with the 2. 0L "Clean Diesel" and was IMPRESSED! She drove one they had on the lot and really liked it. It is a well equipped car, excellent fit and finish, VERY user friendly controls, especially the climate controls and sound system! This is a nice car and she liked it so much that she picks hers up Monday!

It has a HUGE trunk, which she likes, the back seat lays down in three separate sections, the rear seat is comfortable and has nice legroom, the front seats are very comfortable and the little car handles nicely! Neither of us are terribly crazy about front wheel drive, but we were very impressed with the comfort and performance of this car.

A neat thing is, the Volkswagen folks really promote the diesels. I was talking to the salesman and directed him to the back of two "demo" cars on the lot. I wiped my finger in the exhaust pipe of the TDI car and it had NO trace of soot, smell or anything! Did the same on the gasser version and it had soot with a disgusting sulfur smell. These cars were a fair comparison, as it was a TDI 2. 0L and a gasser 2. 0L turbo. Who would NOT want the cleaner running, nearly twice as fuel efficient diesel? It is no wonder the Jetta TDI is Consumer Reports' top rated "small sedan". I am not a "car" person at all, but this little car is mighty impressive! Any of yall looking to get a ultra efficient, comfortable daily driver car should look at the Volkswagen TDIs!

Tell her to go here for lots of good info. (TDIClub Forums - Powered by vBulletin) and also here (myturbodiesel.com Forum - Powered by vBulletin)

As with most forums you only hear the bad mostly. Seems like there have been multiple probs with CEL's re some '10's. Mostly to do with exhaust issues IIRC. Hope she got one of the trouble free ones.

I was thinking about purchasing a 2010 JSW but decided to stand pat after reading about some of the probs the car experienced and the shop time required. For some reason the '10's experienced probs the '09's didn't have.

Too bad we didn't get all the diesel vehicles in my2010 that the manufacturers originally forecast for the U. S. Like a true Cubs fan ,wait till next year.

like you, i'am not much of a car person, and have had only a few favorites over the years. This being said, a good friend of mine went from a 07 bettle to an 09 jetta last year[both diesels]. The little car is rather impressive, but his mileage is about 5mpg under what the salesman claimed it would be. [ I cautioned him about salesmen] only real downside i could see to the vehicle[most any import] was the cost to replace stuff like the altenator, starter, etc;. My neighbor claimed the alt alone is like 800. 00 bucks! He priced one out of curosity. .

we have a 2002 jetta diesel wagon, the most reliable car I have owned, I will be 58 in June so I have owned a few. I only WISH my Dodge truck was HALF as reliable! And still, I do love my truck.

I have 173,000 miles on my 2001 Golf TDI. I like the 50+ MPG and going 700+ miles between fuel stops. The key to reliability for any mechanical system is preventative maintenance; repairs to the VW have not been any more or less than those to my Dodge or my wife's Taurus. The warranty was pretty good, too: 10 years/ 100,000 miles on the powertrain. I was going to buy a 2010 Jetta TDI but found the seats were uncomfortable. The bolsters for the hips are too narrow for me (6'4", 230#) and placed a so much pressure on my thighs that I was sore for a couple of days after my extended test drive. I purchased a Passat instead because the seats were so much more comfortable even though I really liked the TDI/DSG powertrain.

Patrick, I agree about the bolsters on the seats, but it fits my little mama (5'3", 110 pounds) perfectly. I was glad to see her get back in a diesel. She had her first (1987 Mercedes 300SDL) before I had my first (1993 Dodge 250/Cummins) and she missed the fuel economy. She has had Mercedes, BMW and now Volkswagen, so she knows of the expense of German parts. They are all well built cars though. I wish one or all these manufacturers would make a Dakota-sized pickup with a diesel!

Did you buy it in Athens? What do you think of the 10000 oil chang interval? My wife loves her 2010 with about 7500 miles now.

Yessir! Wow, a local feller! I was born in Athens, raised n Oconee/Watkinsville and have lived in Madison/Neese since 1998.

Mama really likes the car. A friend of mine said you should do your first oil change at 5,000 miles, then do the 10,000 mile interval.

I've been considering a Jetta or JSW as a second vehicle lately, but I have only had the chance to drive them with a manual trans. If we would go with one, we would probably want an auto. Anyone have any experience with an auto equipped one, mpg, performance, etc?

I drove an '09 TDI auto and loved it. It does default to economy mode in that it upshifts a little prematurely, but that can be overridden with the shifter. My buddy's a dealer and can't get enough of them from VW. The reliablity of the '09's surpasses all the previous ones according to his records. I can't vouch for the '10's. Excellent build quality and it instills a gut feeling that you'll walk away from a major accident.

They are top rated small sedan by Consumer Reports. VERY well built car and the controls are simple/logical to use. Mama's is an auto. She loves it. Fuel economy is incredible. Seems to be around 40 mpg in mixed driving. I would rather have the manual transmission, but the auto does shift well. I just prefer manual transmissions personally.

We're down to only having full size trucks as our drivers, but some new commitments have us going downtown about 40-50 times a year. If I'm lucky, I can find a spot in an open lot, but most of the parking is in garages. I don't want to take a step back in safety, but it is almost getting impractical to not have something smaller.

I personally really liked the Passat wagons we looked at, but the Jetta is very nice also and I've always wanted a TDI. I have an older Corvette for sale that needs to go first before I can make a move, so I probably have a little time yet to make up my mind.

Test drive the Jetta. The damn thing surprised me! I am NOT a car person at all, but these are nice little cars. The TDI is a peppy little engine and the ride/handling is great. The controls for the radio and heat/air are simple to use and set. Mama's is automatic, but I would rather have the manual, although the auto does shift/perform about the best I have seen an auto do.

The local VW dealer has a couple of auto's on the lot now. Just haven't had a chance to get out there.

We've got 2 VW's in the family. The 2006 Rabbit is the wife's, the 2007 Rabbit is the daughters. Both are the 2. 5L gas engine with 5 speed manual and get about 30 mpg. We have had these cars from new and are still impressed with the overall quality.

When we were in Europe in February (2010) we rented a VW Golf TDI, Basically, the same thing as a Rabbit. What a treat! It has so many standard safety features and electronics that we are going to look for a new model here - equipped like that one.

The best part was, even though we were not kind to it doing an average of 85mph, we still got 38mpg! Unfortunately, the price per gallon for diesel came out to $4. 56.

We have an 06 that is good and bad. Bad is that every couple weeks it struggles on start up. A VW race/tuner shop has not been able to figure out after multiple inspections. Replaced fuel pump, check starter, check/bleed fuel lines, fuel filter etc etc. The female splines on the DMF wore out and caused a pretty bad rattle, replaced under warranty. Brakes were supposedly serviced and inspected by VW dealer in Santa Cruz caused us to buy new rotors shortly after we bought the car.
Good, the car is pretty quick and gets fantastic mileage, the DSG transmission works great. I wanted a manual she wanted an auto. With the sport and tip tronic modes it is really fun to drive. I put 25$ in yesterday and got 3/4 tank with 50miles left on the computer. I wish that VW would put the TDI in the minivan.

I have a 98 tdi, in my area Dealers will not deal on tdi,s.

they want sticker price. at the end of year when sales

are on, tdi,s are excluded.

I just changed the oil on our 03 jetta wagon at 179350 miles. STILL on original front brakes with plenty left, changed the rear two months ago. Did the timing belt at 105k. Repaced the following since new; tail light bulb, 2 headlights, thermostat, glow plugs, shifter boot (torn), 2 batterys, 3 sets of tires and the usual oil, fuel, air and cabin filters. When I said in the earlier post that it was the most reliable car I have ever owned, perhaps I should have elaborated. I should also add; at about 170 k miles I calculated that I had saved just under $ 10,000 in 7 years driving on fuel compared to our next best mileage car, which gets 25 MPG.

WOW! You have been running that thing! Sounds like it has been a good car. The new ones are greatly improved in interior, ease of use, creature comforts, etc. I hope the engines hold up as well!
