As the title states I have a 2012 68RFE that has a P2701 code, inadequate volume element 2C, no cel from the code, trans seems to shift normally. The truck has @38k on it mostly used for towing our gooseneck horse trailer (17-18k). This is the second time for this code, the first time was at 26k, no cel, took it to the dealer who replaced the valve body I also had them replace the spin on filter and the sump filter when it was apart.

I am still within my 5 year powertrain warranty (bought truck new in 2013) so it needs to go back to the dealer to be repaired. Looking for some insight from transengineer before I take it back so I can get it fixed correctly this time. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in response, just now saw your post. P2701 indicates that your 2C clutch volume index (CVI) has dropped to a very low value (like 5 or less). Since the CVI reading is an indication of how much fluid volume it takes to apply the 2C clutch, a low CVI usually means that the clutch return spring isn't working (therefore, the piston stays stroked all the time). The 2C uses a belleville spring as a return spring. This is essentially a large coned ring. It is retained by a snap ring. Odds are that snap ring has popped out of its groove. So the fix is likely just reinstalling the snap ring, and probably replacing the 2C clutch pack, since it will likely be heat stressed from running with no clearance. Unfortunately, you have to remove the trans and tear it partway down to get to the snap ring, so the labor cost is significant.
Your shop should first drop the pan and valve body, and air check the 2C clutch to see if the piston is stroking properly or not (I'm guessing it won't be, which confirms a likely snap ring problem). If the 2C piston IS actually stroking and returning properly, then the problem is in the valve body, most likely a broken 2C accumulator piston spring (which, again, affects the fluid volume needed to apply the clutch). But that is a long shot, since the 2C accumulator piston actually has TWO springs in it, so you'd have to have BOTH of them break (which I have never seen happen) for that to be the cause.

Thank you very much for the reply. I was figuring the trans had to come out this time. Thankfully I am still within my 5 year powertrain warranty.

Again, thank you very much. I greatly appreciate it.
