Are EGR free engines in our future?

My brother in law has owned a 2012 3500 drw auto w/3.42 gears since new. He was having DPF trouble shortly after it was new. The dealer installed an H and S tuner. He's not impressed with the mileage and drivability. What are the tuning options for the engine and transmission? Monitoring engine parameters would be good too. The truck has a 2300 lb Deweze bale deck on it and pulls a trailer most miles.

Ive heard that a good transmission tune and engine tune can increase mileage 1-2 mpg a over a poor tune.

I would look into EFI Live for the truck you will also need a program for the EFI Live, that is provided or you could get a custom one. Here is the link to EFI live site. https://www.efilive.com/ Check this out and all of the information that is provided to you.

I think that the H and S tuner will have to be removed and than you will install the EFI Live but you should also look into the Edge Insight CST for monitoring capability. This combination has been will received in the Cummins family you have made this transition.

Good Luck!

i would contact a tune writer,
I had EFIlive, it had gobs of power but didn't drive right for me.
i went with Raceme Ultra. and it's a world of difference over EFI live. plus if you don't like the stock tunes the ultra comes with, you can get custom tuning from popular tuners. and you can take the tuner with you to your next truck.
Calibrated, anarchy, PPIE, to name a few.
i write my own tunes.

transmission tune won't increase mpg but it will make it work better. IIRC, Firepunk and Anarchy have the best tunes for the trans out there. Might check with Revmax and see who they recommend for a good trans tune.

There are 3 tune platforms available; EFILive, HPT, and Smarty UDC Pro. Smarty is the only one that comes with an electronic gauge viewer like the CST, the other require purchasing something for a monitor or analog gauges. Smarty is the only single source for all the tools; programming, managing, tuning. Most of them, if not all, will allow tuning even with the emissions intact and will make an improvement in mpg and fuel dilution, or, a complete delete. You almost have to pick a tuner then go with what they will support these days, that will somewhat depend on what you want from the tuning.

H&S is out of business so getting another solution before there are problems is a good idea.

If he wants gauges with it then he needs a RaceMe Ultra.

The box tunes are good and come with trans tuning. Custom tuning can also tune the 68RFE.
