The 2014 Buyers guide shows that a 3500 DRW ordered with the Aisin/3. 42s does not come with the heavier 11. 8" rear axle setup, only available with the 3. 73 and 4. 10.

Anyone with a 2013 DRW/Aisin/3. 42 have the heavier rear axle setup which I assume is present only with the Aluminum finned cover?

The window sticker will show the 300MM axle on it. Realize that it is sort of "overkill" for most uses because the 11. 5" is bigger than the old Dana 80 (11. 1") and has been trouble free. I suspect the engineers went to it for the trucks that might tow up to 30k pounds as extra insurance. The SRW 3500s have the 11. 5" and yet will tow and haul more than dually pickups used to do. The SRW 3500 have about 17k towing; dually 3500s with 3. 42 and 3. 73 have lower tow ratings, in the 20k range for 3. 42 and about 3k more with 3. 73. I also suspect that some of the "break" between 3. 42 and 3. 73, going from 11. 5 to 11. 8" is cost vs. availability vs. capability.

Thanks for the info, but not an 'overkill' for me as I've gone through several transmissions and a couple of broken pinion gears over my driving years (although none in my Ram). Just looking to see if the 3. 42s get the 300mm axle in a DRW which should be a good fit for hauling a heavy truck camper. THe Ram window stickers have been reading strange things lately and not necesarily what is on the truck.

I agree that the dually is a good choice for a big, heavy camper. I wouldn't worry about the 11. 5" gear set, but if you do, get 3. 73 or 4. 10. Also note that if you order a 2014 you will lose the rebates and experience a cost increase of $600 in the truck with Cummins.

If I have to go for 3. 73s to get the 300mm, it's only $50 and a big upgrade IMO. Yes, no rebates for a 14' yet, but I keep my trucks for a long time and I order what I want/need (Big Horn). Nothing in my area for 13's except for the usual loaded $64K Laramies, discounted yes but only a Ram -$2500 in the Northeast, that's nothing for a leftover IMO. I plan to order with the affiliate pricing plan, finally picked a color, metallic Steel, so I think I'm ready, maybe by the time it comes there will be some sort of rebates in by December.

I will look on ramtrucks if you list what you have to have on it.
My local dealer has a $64K 2013 Laramie on the lot, not really what I'm looking for, but if the price was right I'd get over it.
I see Ram now has a $3K "rebate" until 30SEPT on the leftovers in my area, I'll see if they would take another $9K off the msrp, I'd go for it.
So many have been posting $10K-$12K below msrp, we'll see about that?

I had one of the Dodge dealers I deal with do a search... ... ... ... ... ... . ONE, only ONE 2013 left in America the way I wanted it. I'm in Florida and it is in Calif. Looks like I will order a '14.

When you say there is only one in America, and you are basing it on a salesman's statement, I wonder if you want to buy a bridge from me? I repeat, if someone wants to state specifically what they have to have, I will look for it. It may have more stuff, or might be missing one of the minor options, hopefully one you can add later. I did a lot of searching before I found just what I wanted, or very close, in July.

As for distance, air tickets are cheap, and the trip back is a way to break it in! I found what I wanted in a litle town in Colorado 280 miles north of Albuquerque. No pain at all, in the trip or in the negotiations [Town and Country, Salida CO, Eric Murdoch, if anyone cares ;) ]

Don't want to hijack the thread, but haven't found a good answer. I'm thinking about finially replacing my '96' dually and like what I'm reading about the '13's. I want the aisin transmission (I always liked manuals, but I'm impressed with what I've read about the Aisis, and my wife could drive in a pinch). Originally I wanted the 4. 10, but don't like the mileage. Can't decide between the 3. 32 and 3. 73.

My question is, what mileage penility would I pay getting the 3. 73? Both empty at 70 - 75mph, and pulling a 5th wheel. Since I keep my trucks a long time, I'm planning for retirement - if it ever comes.

Thanks,

Gene

Empty and with a moderate trailer weight, 3. 42 will help mileage. 4. 10 would be for mostly heavy towing. 3. 73 is in between, of course, and might mean fewer downshifts out of 6th. The factory rates the dually trucks at about 20K, 23K and 30K towing capacity, to give you an idea of the max and allowing you to give a "safety margin" below max.

Joe, Thanks. I figured that it would fall in between, just haven't seen anyone post real world numbers. I've been spoiled with my slightly modified truck. I've test driven a 2500 with the 3. 42 and 8oo torque engine and wasn't impressed. I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds! And I know there are penalities, just trying to figure out if I'll loose 1 MPG or 3, or 5?

Normal highway runs (200 miles or less) I get around 20 MPG. Long vacation runs (I,000 miles plus) I average around 22 MPG. Hope the new truck could be within 2 or so of that. I know I have a 4x2 and am looking for a 4x4.

Going Aisin/DRW? That combo for 14' with 3. 73/4. 11 seems to give us a no cost upgrade to the 300mm rear axle. As I'll often carry a 5000 lb truck camper up to the mountains, I'll opt for the 3. 73s just to get it. The axle upgrade is more than just the 11. 8 ring/pinion set. In the past I blew up my Trans Am rear end, and one in a GMC 1500 and I'm easy on my vehicles, overkill is ok for me.

So much depends on how you drive. As you go to the 3. 73, which I am getting, then to the 4. 10, you need to drive slower if you do not want to really kill mpg. If you are happy at 65, you will do pretty good with the 3. 73. If you want to run 75 to 80 a lot of the time, you should go to the 3. 42, unless you want to get poor mileage.
