Hello
Is there a actual exhaust brake in addition to the VGT? Does anyone have a schematic on the “exhaust brake” system ?

I am under the impression that ALL THE EXHAUST BRAKING .. is done through the VGT TURBO?

Please correct me or enlighten me on this subject!

Thank you

yep, the VNT in the closed position is a exhaust brake. amazing what a VNT can do, it controls boost pressure, turbo speed and exhaust back pressure.

the engine manufacturers had to go to a VNT back when they started having to use EGR, they had no way to control EGR flow expept by controlling those 3 factors previously mentioned... one of the side benefits was they also were able to use the VGT as an exhaust brake.

Can you define the VNT please!

Varibale Nozzle Turbocharger also referred to as a VGT, Variable Geometry Turbo.

on a Cummins you generally have some type of Holset water cooled turbo, with a single moving part in the turbine housing which does all the metering of exhaust passing over the turbine wheel. this video shows it better than I can explain it.
