Just had new tires (Michelins) installed at Costco yesterday and the tech commented that some of the corners are rounding off on the lug nuts and I should carry some spares. Also said this is a problems with Rams and Toyotas. The truck is a 3500 with stock 18 inch rims. Anyone had this issue or heard of it. Or is it just another example of too much torque on the air gun?

Cheap labor....cheap lug nuts.....air guns......a recipe for disaster.......

Been carrying around a 7/8 inch socket. But these lug nuts are definitely made of a malleable steel.

Going to switch out the 7/8 6 pt socket for a 22 mm (6 pt) which has a tighter fit. And will check out those gorilla nuts. Just don't tell anyone I'm checking out the gorilla nuts.

Edit: Do those 66147dx support the center caps? (Not interfere, accept the mounting plastics, etc)

Using the wrong socket or worn out socket.

IMO thats the biggest culprit, that and the knot heads doing the work . My truck has been in a tire shop one time , to get new tires, after that no one touches my tires ,and wheels. I do my own rotating, and its done right . My lug nuts look like new, probably been torqued about six or seven times from rotating.

Went in yesterday for the water pump replacement and the brake interlock or whatever it is, fix. Asked about the lug nut issue and confirmed that it is an issue. The advisor also said some are two piece like the Ford but mine don't appear to be. Anyway...thanks for the replies. I too usually do my own rotation. Had to replace all the lug nuts and studs on my 2004.5 due to the shops dinging those up so bad I had to use an air gun on high pressure to get them off. Found out I was not the only one when ordering the parts from NAPA. I will take a look at the Gorilla brand.

Wondering if there are different lug nuts on different models, I have a 2014 Laramie, and they look as good as new, not the slightest hint of rounding or any other problem.

I know the Laramie had different wheels than mine, a Big Horn 4x4. Some of the lugs look fine so I tend to think it's more abuse than use.

Go to YouTube and watch the videos of people switching to solid lug nuts. The factory units are very low quality and the outer shell seems to have not been designed for being touched by tools......seems odd to me! I’ve run into it on my 2014 longhorn and my 2016 Bighorn. Very low quality lug nuts, NOT improper tool useage.

Laramie has got to be different not a scratch on them . No round corners , nothing , look good as new . In my case I KNOW it’s NOT improper tool useage. I use the proper size socket , and torque .

Maybe a difference in geography as well. I know I didn’t have problems with mine until after a really salty winter. The outer shell was swelling to the point I had to pound the socket on.....the same socket I used the previous summer. The gorilla lug nuts solved the problem on my longhorn. Never did replace the lug nuts on the Bighorn as I didn’t keep it long enough.

I can't seem to find the Gorilla nuts, make that lug nuts, in anything other than a four pack. For eight packs that would make replacing them just short of $200. Is there a better option or do we just bite the bullet? Looks like in other brands and colors you can get larger quantities.

There is a lot of selection of Gorilla lug nuts on Amazon. Not sure what size we have, but there were lots of 32, nowhere near $200. I saw chrome plated Gorilla, not sure what you are after , but probably have both chrome ,and stainless.

I looked on Amazon at the 66147DX mentioned above and Summit but the bright metal are only available in a four pack. As far as I can find anyway. Also looked at the Gorilla website. Can't find more than a four pack there either.

What size lug nut do we have ??? Does it have to be Gorilla or will other brands of aftermarket work.

I was surprised to see the lug nut for our trucks is the same as the 1500 and Durango. But I guess they can do that with the lug nuts and bolts because we have more of them.
