Hello all... I find myself terribly confused and caught in the middle.

Back in December, I hit a deer with my 2014 Ram 3500 Cummins. The deer pushed the middle of the bumper in enough to damage the intercooler, radiators, and such. I took the truck to a body shop I had used multiple times and trusted. I informed the body shop to be very careful what coolant was used when repairing the truck, as I knew from my time here, that these trucks require a very specific coolant. Anyhow, the truck was repaired and all seemed fine.

Yesterday, I took in the truck, to a dealer for the T51 water pump recall. The dealer called me early yesterday morning stating that my truck had the wrong coolant in it. They claim it was filled with orange, 5 year coolant and that my truck required purple 10 year coolant. They went on to explain that if I didn't have it flushed and refilled with the proper coolant, they would void the remainder of my powertrain warranty (truck is at 57k miles). I was slammed at work so I didn't have time to deal with it really, and I needed the truck back yesterday to go pick up a load of feed. I authorized them to do coolant flush so it would maintain my warranty. I then called my body shop guy, he claimed that he used the right stuff, albeit not Mopar branded. He even went on the claim that he called chrysler themselves before using the coolant, and claims that they agreed the coolant used would be ok. They used Zerex dex-cool. Looking at the specs for this coolant it is a GM OAT formulation. It also (in the spec sheets) shows that, while it is not "approved" by mopar, it does meet and / or exceed the spec MS-12106 requirements as called out for my truck.

So now I am left wondering... How the hell can the dealer void my powertrain warranty based on the coolant color? Is the coolant that was used really a problem? I wish I wasn't so busy yesterday and could have dealt with this, as I feel like I totally got taken advantage of.

Anyone else have a similiar experience? Note - This dealer is not my favorite, although they have done a decent job of service for me in the past... wish there was another dealer option close, although a longer drive may well be warranted now.

The dealer doesn’t have the authority to void your warranty. That can only be done by FCA.The dealer would have to have a rep come out and inspect and agree with the dealers recommendation. That being said it is always best practice to not blend any fluids to be sure there will be no bad interactions.
Warranties are not usually voided but may have restrictions on a particular system that was tampered with.

The coolant that came in mine when new had/has an orange/pink appearance in the reservoir tank. When I replaced the top wye, I was surprised to see that the 10 year/150k coolant was purple in color.

Do the 2013's use a different coolant than 2014's?

When doing the Vin number check the dealer comes up with that my truck was in fact filled with the 5 year coolant not the 10 year stuff. After my water pump swap out yesterday they filled it back up with the 5 year stuff....

I think I will have the dealer flush my coolant when they do the water pump. I'm at 4 1/2 years from purchase. I think mine has the 5 year stuff. I'll let them figure out what it is supposed to have.

FCA has 2 colors that are chemically the same, one fiat one Ram.The coolant can also look different in the tank vs in the jug

My ‘14 had the orange/pink coolant when I bought it new. I just had the pump changed today and had the coolant flushed. I’ll have to check the color when I get home.

Did you pay out of pocket for the collision damage or was it covered by insurance? If it was covered by insurance, did the IC recommend this particular body shop?

Then the dealer focusing on the coolant color may have just been trying to drum up some business?

I'm certainly no expert in antifreeze, but does it really matter which kind of antifreeze you use. Back in the old days, that I remember, a cheep bottle of antifreeze worked fine for a year or so. Now, I guess these long life antifreeze solutions have different colors. Mine came with the purple stuff for a whole 10 years, WoW. Maybe they just used different ones sometimes. I doubt it hurts the radiators any with these new solutions. Longer life means more expensive. I don't know.

Not sure I trust you dealer.....Look at pages 125 & 126 of the 2013 Diesel Supplement.....it states coolant conforming to MS-12106 must be used, and is described as OAT 10 yr/150K variety.

Materials used in the system may be affected by the wrong coolant, different types of coolants also do not play well together. There is no efficient way to change 100% of one type to another.

When I went in for a recall (steering, I think) the dealer tried the same thing with me for my '11. I called bull on him, as I had just put in the HOAT Zerex G-05 not two weeks earlier. I even had half a bottle in the truck with me as I carried it to top off after a bit of driving to get any bubbles out. It was already out of warranty, but that's not my point here. A dealer needs to write extra tickets, especially with all this warranty work out there
Magnussen Moss is your friend for warranties. Don't let a dealer push you around on stuff like that.

No.....see above.

Yeah. I saw it is th 10 year/150k OAT on pg 128 of the 2013 diesel supplement and also oh 697 of the regular owners manual. Pages may be different from year to year. But I think when the dealer looks it up by vin, it tells the real story???
