Hello all, after a trip with the truck this weekend on the way home I started to hear a squeak between 5-10 mph. I stopped at the dodge dealer I was close to and they had no idea and could not look at the truck for 2 weeks so I continued on my way. I got home and the sound seemed to be coming from the area of the u joint at the rear end. I pressure washed the truck and put it away for a few days. Today I jacked it up and found no noise, no slop in the drive line and did not hear anything driving it down the road again. Do those u joints start to squeak when they are going bad? The only thing I could think of is maybe the bearings are dry/shot in it and they got hot from lots of miles that weekend. Any input would be great.

The drive shafts on these trucks have such large u-joints that in most of the cases you can't feel the play, or the roughness... in each case with one of my trucks... we've found that we just take them apart and inspect them at 60-75K miles... when possible we replace them with joints that can be greased...

Of course if you wait long enough you can feel them getting rough when you add a load...

A quick and dirty test-next time you are out driving it shoot all the u-joints with an ir heat gun and compare temps

After checking the u-joints look at the rear diff, every once in a while the QC fails on the axle setup and parts.
