Hi all,
I’m a long time member but I don’t post till now.
I have a 2014 3500 SRW.
As I was changing the oil about 2 months ago, which I do from the top, I found the intake duct that clamps on the turbo was cracked right under the hose clamp. I tried cobbling some tape on it but nothing I tried worked.
Went to the dealership to get a new intake assembly but none were in existence nationwide.
I found an OEM parts source on the web and ordered one. That took 2 months for me to get it.
When I went to replaced the duct, I found the compressor wheel was “Dusted “
My question is, Can the compressor wheel be changed “in place” without removing the whole turbo?
According to the gauge on my Big Horn Trim, I am still getting 13 lbs of boost on hard acceleration and the exhaust brake seems to be working fine. This is with no trailers/load.
Thanks in advance for all replies!

Merry Christmas!!!

If the compressor has very obvious signs of being dusted, then I would be suspect of everything downstream from there. How is your oil consumption? If it has increased significantly or is high the entire engine is dusted. It does not take all that long for intake leaks to do a lot of damage, especially if the unit is operated off road in dusty conditions.

Had a customer with a class 8 that dusted an engine due to a defective air box in 18K. And the truck only ran on paved roads and the port of Oakland in the SF bay area.

High oil consumption? Take it to a reputable shop and get it inspected.

13 psi is too low, even empty. You should peak in the high 20’s, maybe low 30’s thou I rarely hit 30 with my 18 HO.

Any photos of the wheel? It is chipped, eroded, or just dirty?

The inside surface of the hose clamp is slightly rusted and pitted.

This is the cause of my issue.
This is the result to the compressor wheel.

That doesn't look good at all. That compressor wheel looks like something was up against it and has ground the fins off. IMHO you have got to have some deeper and much more serious problems inside the engine. That metal went somewhere down stream and the intercooler is not a very good filter. Sorry to see what you are up against. Keep us posted on your progress.

Yikes!

You need to pull the intercooler and intake to see how far the metal made it.

You might get away with just a compressor wheel, but it may also be worth having the turbo gone thru as it looks like something was resting on the wheel and that could have done damage to the bearing and seals. It’s also likely very unbalanced, which also will damage the bearing.

Looks like you were sucking rocks and ??? up thru that huge hole. No Brake clean will fix that.

I would do an oil analysis before anything else to see if the engine has been effected. I will bet the cylinder walls don't look good.

May be time to trade it in on a new one.
Harsh bro. Feel sorry for the next guy getting that truck.

Hey Guys,

Sorry it took so long but I wanted to bring closure to this thread..

I bought this truck brand new and at the time i could not get a Maxcare Warranty for more than 5-6 years, forgive me if that's incorrect.

I did purchase a third party warranty thru Fidelity. 10 Year/100,000 Miles. I must say they have been outstanding with covering issues in the past.

I took the truck to my dealer, showed the service writer my defective intake tube and the pics of turbo wheel..They took the truck in and contacted Fidelity thru their process/protocol.

The initial response was that they would not cover the turbo..They said something was "injested into the turbo"

My theory is that the cracked /split intake allowed unfiltered air into the airstream, thus eroding the compressor wheel.

Long story but I complained up the chain to the Fidelity Supervision and they ended up covering the turbo and intercooler replacement.
