2015 Durango VS Tahoe

So my wife currently drives a 97 Tahoe. That's right, a 97 Tahoe w/ 240K miles. And she loves it!....I hate it, but cars aren't her thing. If they get her back in forth, she's happy.

Anyway, a month or so ago, we rented a Durango for about a week and I fell in love with it. Jul liked it as well so I instantly start hammering her to buy one over another Tahoe.

So now it's go time to replace her Tahoe but she's on the fence because the Durango is slightly smaller than a Tahoe. We have a budget of about $35K for her car. So I keep reminding her that we can (A) but a BRAND new Durango, or (B) buy a used Tahoe for that price.

If any of you Joes have some input on this debate, please advise.

Or...(C) Find a slightly used, pre-loved Escalade. She'll throw rocks at the other two choices once she perches in the Caddy.

I guess I should be grateful my wife is an El Cheap wife. She'll look at the Caddy and say, "That's nice". I've been jawing at her for six months about dumping the Tahoe before we put another dime into it.........and she just keeps driving it.

I "downgraded" my wife from a Navigator, to a Grand Cherokee SRT8, and now to a '14 Durango Citadel. My wife wanted the 3 rows. It's her favorite vehicle she's owned. I was considering the GM products, but I just can't get over the live rear axle as it really limits rear legroom with the much higher floor. This is the main reason I went with the Navigator over the Caddy back in the day. Not sure if the new Caddy's have IRS yet, but I don't think they do. It's a showstopper for me.

In the middle of a road trip with the Durango from AZ to GA. We're pulling a 5k trailer, and it's doing great. The 8-speed transmission is the best in the business. Our Durango is a Hemi AWD.

The Durango is being discontinued after 15 which would make me hesitant about buying one. The new Tahoes are nice. I know Ford isnt very well liked around here but the wife and I are looking at replacing our 08 Mountaineer and have been looking at either a Flex or maybe an Edge. The Flex is a little funky to look at at first sight but really like the way the interiors are laid out and the ride is excellent. The more I look at them the more I like em.

We traded our 04 Tahoe for a Durango, wife loves it. It is her ride, I like it as well. Out performs and out drives the Tahoe and better fuel mileage as well.

Now a serious answer...

I would probably go with the Yukon, they have a pick up truck feel to them. In all fairness I have not driven a late model Durango. I did however have to drill out a LH rear broken exhaust stud on my Father's Durango with the V-8 motor and that was NOT a good time.

I look for ease of repair where I buy used (the only exception to that was the Mega Cab but plan on keeping it until I croak) and do my own work 99% of the time. Yukons have more room for my fat hands to work in and the components are shared with many GM platforms which in turn keeps replacement parts pricing down.
Even Hoopty shares many parts with other popular platforms.

My SIL has a Durango. Seems to like it a lot. They got the 6cyl Citadel. It seems like a really big vehicle to me but it does look nice coming down the road. I imagine the Tahoe is also a nice ride.
I don't think you would go wrong with either vehicle. New is nice - shouldn't have to work on it for awhile, around here used is nice because of the high price of the taxes and registrations. Call you insurance company and see if there is a difference in cost.

I was told they weren't making it after the '14 model year, now they're saying the '15. The reality is they will likely discontinue it when the Jeep Wagoneer version comes out. I'm not sure if they'll get that out by '16, or if it will be '17. Durango will likely go away after that, but not before.

I really don't think the Durango is going anywhere soon. As far as comparing it to a Tahoe? I really can't because I haven't driven a current Tahoe. We were shopping for a 3rd row SUV last year, and were considering everything $40k and less. I really tried to get a fleet trim/ LEO spec Tahoe, but that's next to impossible. Once we went back to the Durango and looked at the trims, It was just the best deal. We found ourselves in a '14 R/T (in sig), and dollars to donuts it's fantastic!
One year and 15Kmi later we have only one complaint. The rear strut setup is "niviomat" self leveling, and has a certain valving that under the right conditions sounds like a rattle. This is documented well on other sites.
The truck is trimmed out real nice- real comfy, runs great, has ballz, turns heads, and gets 23 MPG on the highway. I strongly urge getting the Hemi- it comes with a popular 2 speed NP transfer case whereas the 6 only has a 1 speed AWD case. I highly recommend it!

My advice, let her drive them all and scope out the other competition too. Toyota SUVs, and Ford Expedition and Explorer. And then let HER decide.

I've driven a new Durango, I liked it for being a wagon like SUV.
I've ridden in a couple of the brand new Tahoes and Suburbans and they are real super awesome traditional SUVs.

I'd by the Suburban, my wife wants a Toyota Highlander. LOL.

This is correct. It's more a wagon than a truck. My 1st gen Durango is a truck. Two very different species with the same name.

I did a lot of research in to this subject earlier in the year. I was convinced that I wanted a Suburban or Expedition and ultimately ended up with a van.

They all have their plusses and minuses. The new Suburban and Yukon are very nice, but are very high priced compared to the competition and depreciate very quickly.
Definitely worth buying used if you can find a good one. I think the Durango gives you a great value for the dollar but comes at the loss of the size and capacity.

If you like the Durango and don't need the 7 pass. space look at the Eco Jeep GC thy are Very Nice ride and handle very well and get Great Fuel economy. have the 8 sp auto and run very quiet also.
