2000 Ford Excursion......things to do or change?

Was having lunch at Costco and a tow truck owner asked to join me.

Having problems with the 4x4 low range, won't go into low range, Dodge house has replaced and tried changing out switches and modules to no avail, finally Chrysler / fiat told them to replace the transfer case, problem now is its on back order, anyone else have this problem? If so what was the fix

Update, dealer finally got the transfer case in and installed2 weeks ago, and it still doesn't work, now waiting on Chrysler to tell them what to do next, crap tired of waiting, what could be wrong? Jeep is still sitting in lot, Thanks in advance, any suggestions would be appreciated, Monte

Did it ever work? Assuming there is some kind of actuator to complete the shift, is it external? If so, has that been swapped out? I don't know too much about this newer, rolling computer stuff. Maybe the ECM/PCM is from a 2WD car:{

I bought it in March 2015 , never tried it until March 2016, was up in Utah and bragging to my bro about it and he wanted to see it, was very disappointed when it wouldn't go into low range, I drove one prior to this and it shifted fine into low range, going to give them another week and see if they can figure it out, then the lemon law arbitration proceedings, mechanic says he's replaced everything and he's stumped, my low range and 4x4 in my Dodge truck has worked flawlessly for 9 yrs.i like the jeep, just hope they get it figured out, 30 mpg is pretty nice , Thanks, Monte

Seeing a lot more very difficult to Diag issues since Fiat entered the picture,no more Jeeps for the wife. Not an easy choice went Toyota with fingers crossed

Last year my daughter and I looked at trailhawks but we both bought Wrangler Unlimiteds. No substitute for the real thing, and a real transfer case lever. Of course, the mpg isn't as good with a Wrangler. I have the electric case on my Ram but it has worked fine--would have preferred a lever but would have had to get a Tradesman to get it. The electric system in the Ram works great, however.

Just bought a Tacoma TRD 4X4 Off-road, within 200 miles was testing all 4X4 systems, although I was easy on it, it worked as advertised. There was a weird noise with the Crawl mode, but turned out to be normal after research.

Sorry to hear your having troubles with your Jeep. I almost went with a Wrangler, but the low tow ratings made me balk at it.

Did the selector light flash when you attempted to shift into 4Lo? Flashing indicator lamp usually means the shift could not be completed. Also you dealer has to keep in mind that there are two assemblies that need to shift at the same time in order for 4Lo to work. There is a hi/lo planetary in the transfer case, and also one in the Rear Differential Module (RDM). The problem could very well be in the RDM. If the TC makes the shift to 4Lo but the RDM does not the shift will abort. If it didn't you would have the front wheels in low range and the rear wheels in hi range. The drive line would want to twist in half. So if I was working on it I would make sure both TC and RDM are capable of making the shift.
Also I'm assuming there are no fault codes? I don't think the question was ever answered, did it work as designed before now?

Also, is the RDM a single or two speed unit? Could have been built incorrectly and if you never used it before you might not have noticed it. Just trying to think of why the dealer is so stumped.

He made it sound as though it was the front transfer case or power transfer unit. That is why I mentioned they cannot overlook the rear unit as they have to work in tandem.

Well talked to dealer today and they are still waiting on Chrysler STAR to tell them what to try next, This was the first time I tried the low range and it wouldn't go, light flashed 9 times then cancelled shift each time, told them I'd give em a little more time before I start lemon law proceedings, Told what you said SAG2 Thanks for the responses, Monte

Well Jeep is still sitting on the back lot where they parked a week ago, apparently they are not too worried about fixing it, or Chrysler hasn't figured out what to try next, getting frustrated.

Well dealer told me today that Chrysler told them there was a 3rd module that they need to replace, so it's coming in from Dallas in the morning and see if that resolves the issue, crossing my fingers, Monte

Well the saga continues, they installed the rear drive unit and it still doesn't work, was gonna do lemon law but found out quickly that I was gonna have to eat around 9000.00, so told them to do whatever was required to fix it, and I will just drive their 2016 journey until Monday mine is fixed, told them in July I will be going to Utah in my vehicle or theirs

Man, I have been in your shoes, and it is no fun at all. I sure hope it works out for you. I successfully went Lemon Law on the last "problem child"(Chevy), but it didn't cost me anywhere near what you would be facing.

Well according to Chrysler I have 25600 miles on the vehicle and they want to charge me .38 mile for them miles, even though this has never worked from day one, I just never tried to engage it for a year, wished I would have tried it the day I bought it, anyway I'd like to have the vehicle back, I like it, but this has been a pain in the butt, then the dealership told me they wee doing me a favor loaning me a vehicle to drive because I did not buy my jeep from them, I told them I most certainly did buy it from them, then the service manager got a lot nicer , especially when I told him I was going to Utah with my vehicle or theirs, but one of the vehicles was making that trip, maybe that will be an incentive to hurry up the fix

Wow! I've never heard of anyone paying for usage under the lemon law- but I don't know much about it. If after this attempt, if things don't get resolved, I would seek legal advice and learn how lemon law works in your state. They probably don't want to buy ANOTHER one back.
If you do wind up taking the journey to Utah, (pun intended) please make sure insurance is up to snuff, you may have to cover yourself for that trip. I know I would.
I am working through a similar no shift diagnosis my self, on one of the F550's I work on.
I happen to know this unit was abused last winter, and now during our summertime prep for next winter, I find that the transfer case shift motor won't shift the case out of 2 wheel. This is a current gen truck with a Ford case. When I remove the motor, and let it hang, it works, and if I attempt to move the nub with a fits all, I got high effort but it shifts. The decision makers want to try a new motor, and I'll be putting it in next week, but I think I'll be going in the case.
Why can't they just leave at least one work model full manual, like Dodge?
