Cummins1298 -- why is the cargo camera useless for hitching up your 5ver and, based on the info posted at the beginning of this thread, would the new 2016 camera system address any of important things that are deficient in the present system?

I am disgusted with the backup camera in my mirror and the cargo camera is useless to me for hooking my 5er.

I agree. My '13 had the tailgate in the radio but I decided to purchase the in-bed camera for my '14 and hate it. I use the tail-gate backup camera almost daily when parking and having it in the rear view mirror just sucks. I wish there was a way to toggle between the two, and it sounds RAM is listening. That is great, but what about us older installs???? Uggghhhh.....

Anyways, I thought the in-bed camera would help hooking the GN up but on multiple occasions I still needed to get out of the truck, look at the GN and get back in to make minor adjustments. The camera will get you close but not 100% on target. Not being able to judge depth with the camera is the real issue. I thought fivers would have it easier then GN's. I am guessing not.

is the problem here that the cargo camera viewable image is small, or is the problem that the camera's install location and lens focal length do not provide the right view perspective? Not being able to judge depth with the camera is something that is governed by the camera's location and the lens focal length, although a larger viewable image would certainly be a good thing.

I didn't get the backup camera in my 14 and at the time they only offered a Mopar accessory for the mirror. I found info on another forum that said you could add the camera and display it in the RA2 radio. I purchased all the pieces for about $220 and it works great in the radio. I had to make the harness between the tailgate and below the drivers side body connector, but now I see Mopar makes a new package that includes the wiring.
I'm going to guess that you could fool the system into displaying the BU camera in the radio by swapping the inputs at the mirror and radio. To display in the radio you might have to turn on the cargo camera in the radio, then put it in reverse. It would not be that hard to try it and see if it works.

If ya want a detailed image of the front of the bed that's fine but IMHO hitching to the 5er is useless!

I too have found that the cargo camera just doesn't cut it when hooking up to fiver. It's not defined enough, or isn't "zoomed in" enough in the hitch area. You can see the hitch, but it's very difficult to put that kingpin in the hitch with the camera as it is. Perfect for checking cargo in bed, but when your trying to line everything up, the view is just too small. Just my opinion, however.

perfect illustration thanks guys, I can instantly see the problem -- the lens is way too wide. They could make this useful in a heartbeat with an electronic crop mode simulating a "zoom in" . it would be software solution, allowing the driver to touch the hitch, which would zoom in on that point. Clearly, the designers don't tow ....

I would assume you could add the cargo camera by adding the cargo light/camera, wiring, and have the BCM programmed for cargo camera. Most would depend on current configuration of the truck. If it is displaying BU camera in the mirror it would seem to be an easy modification.
