We just added another Cummins powered truck to the stables. My son just purchased a new 2017 Ram 3500 SRW Laramie with the Aisin transmission. My question: Does Ram still use the "in fuel tank" lift pump design that has proved to be a terrible design with its shortcomings from the beginning? On my 2003 Ram, I have a AirDog system on in along with a fuel pressure gauge mounted on my steering column to let me know if I have any issues resulting in a lower fuel PSI reading. Thanks

They have had the in tank pump for better than 10 years now, with very little issues at all. They actually came out with a retro fit to move the lift pump to the tank in older units.

After replacing 3 aftermarket fuel pumps on my 04.5 I retrofitted a factory in tank kit. Lasted me 275,000 miles and is still performing well for my friend who bought the truck from me. Me thinkst you've been fed quite the line of bull.

And they moved to the in-tank pump setup in either 04.5 or 05 models. My '05 is still rolling with the original in-tank pump at 358,000+ miles. That beats the dickens out of my '99 engine mounted electric pump idea.

Another vote for the in-tank pump. I went through several outside mounted aftermarket pumps on my 2004. They were convenient, however, for filter changes and pump replacement. Since fuel cools the pump, it is better to run well over 1/4 tank if possible.

I think you are confused EMoroney... The ones that had a bad track record were the lift pumps mounted external of the tank (as I recall they were near the fuel filter housing).. In 2004.5 they changed to the in tank lift pumps and had next to no issues with them that I have ever heard. In fact they did release a retrofit kit for the '03-04 trucks to use the in tank lift pumps.

They '17 will have an in tank lift pump... no worries with that component!

Oddly enough.....I had a friend with a last year 2nd GEN (2002) that had his lift pump fail within warranty, and he received the in-tank pump at no charge.

The in tank fuel for the 24V never was considered a good thing. They never provided the pressure to assure a good supply of fuel to the VP-44 under all conditions.

Neither did his engine mounted lift pump :-laf His in-tank pump lasted several years.
