I recently upgraded from an 06 mega cab to a 2017 3500 Crew Cab Longbox with dual rear wheels. For years I have used an aftermarket TPMS that also monitors the temperature of the tire. I want to mount this system to the end of the valve stems but Truck System Technologies (TST) does not want these sensors on rubber valve stems. My front and rear outer tires have metal stems. The rear inners are mounted on steel rims with rubber stems. I visited 2 tire shops and 1 big dealer. They all are saying that you can not mount metal stems onto the steel rims without removing the factory TPMS. If I remove the factory system, the dealer states that my TPMS light will always by flashing as it won't be there to be found. So I wanted to see what others on her have done. I pull a 36 foot toy hauler and this after market system has saved me twice before so I trust it more than the factory system, which I understand is not a warning system but more of just a monitoring system. I was thinking of mounting a metal extension that gets mounted into a hole of the outer rim, which should keep the sensor from moving and causing a leak. I could also just mount the aftermarket system on the four corners and the 5th wheel which will cover 80% of my tires. Can anyone offer me some advice.

I did search this forum and all valve stem posts where from older trucks and I was told that this factory system is new to 2016 and 2017 trucks.

With 200 miles I dumped the NEXEN's and added Michelin MS2's. *I run 65psi rears with full RAWR and 80 front. *I occasionally scroll the info on the eVIC. *I also check the temp of all my tires at every stop when towing. *I am not worried about it!

I don't run monitors on my GY "H" tires on my RV with 17,500# on them.

Yesterday I called Ram Customer Care and was told that there was not going to be any answers coming from that phone call. No technical advisors present. I was told to go through a dealer and ask the Service Manager to get an answer from a STAR person but that there was no way for me to speak directly with someone.*

I do appreciate the reply but I need to find the answer to my valve stem question and not about tires. I also run Goodyear G rated 114s on the 5th wheel and I have always been a fan of Michelin LTX but the Nexen seem fine for now.*

Anybody else have anything to add?

If you REALLY want the sensors just change out the valve stem on the outside dual to a straight one. *Then for the inside go to a longer stem that will pole thru the outer wheel hole. *Now you can install your sensors.

My POINT about changing my tires to the MS2's I am so confident in them I would not loose sleep over monitoring them no different than my GY "H" RV tires.

I never even thought about drilling a second hole, that is not a bad idea at all.*

I want to monitor the tires especially while towing for both the truck and trailer. The aftermarket one monitors both pressure and temperature. The stock system only does pressure and from what i have read, it is not a real good system at all and it might not even warn me about an issue until it is too late. I do not want to use extensions or anything else because I have heard that they often cause the leaks. A rubber stem is is more likely to suffer damage if weight is added to the end of it as it will bend and move due to the added weight. My sensors are only a few ounces but I did have an issue before with rubber stems.*

I was just surprised that this is an issue with a 3500 dually and do not even understand the use of a rubber stem with 80 PSI anyway.*

A good number of new wheels have 2 valve stems per wheel so they car purge the air out and install nitrogen in the tires. Not an uncommon thing to do these days.
