Hi All -
I am not sure if this is a new problem or I just have not noticed it before?
The temp gauge reaches its normal level, then constantly moves up and down but within the normal range. The thermostat must be constantly cycling open and closed... Would that be normal?

Mine reaches its normal operating range and stays there. Son has the same truck as me and his does just like mine. I would have yours looked at.

Mine shows maybe plus or minus 2-3 degrees normally 188-193. If it was a gauge with a needle you'd never know it.

Have you made sure that the coolant isn't slightly low? If it has some air in the system it will do this.

I was thinking same thing especially if water pump has been replaced recently. After pump recall change mine was low enough that low coolant light came on, level was just below minimum line on tank. My gauge never fluctuated like he describes and I’d think coolant would have to be fairly low for this and/or substantial amount of air in it.

Normal , thermostat is opening and closing causing the slight fluctuations.
Mine 188-194 also

I watched the digital temp display for a while. Mine moves from about 188 to 198. But as soon as it reaches 188 it quickly moves up to 198 and drops back to 188. It does not sit still. Constantly moving between that range. Non stop.

This is a function of having too much information. I had a 2007 BMW R1200GSA. Those bikes were constantly complained about for overheating. This was odd as the older models never overheated.

Main difference? The newer ones now had a temperature gauge. The old ones didn't.

The precision of the digital gauge is messing with you.

I invite you to read this entire thread from the beginning.

I have a brand new 17 and the temp going down the highway will go from 194*-192* as fast as you can bat your eyes. Back and forth back and forth. I took a video of it while driving and they did a computer update last week and I have yet go go on a long drive to see if its still doing it. I cant believe they cant program more lag into the electronics to stop it. Not sure if this sounds familiar to the issue you have?

I believe this is normal. The Cummins is designed to work hard and has the cooling capacity to handle it. In the cooler months there just isn't enough heat created for the thermostat to find a happy medium. I could see the temp gauge fluctuate on my old '96' 12 valve. On the '96' I had a digital EGT gauge and in the winter at idle the exhaust in the manifold would barely get above 200* F.
