I just picked up a 2018 Ram 3500 DRW Tradesman with the Aisin transmission and 4.10 gears. I do a lot of hauling on the road. Cruising at 70 mph sets me at 2,000 rpm's which is higher than I like so I'm feeling a little regret. Did I make a good choice? Wondering how hard of a hit I'm going to be taking in mpg's.

I don't know if I'm just not used to the Aisin coming from the 68RFE on my 2011, or if there's something wrong. It seems weird shifting in lower gears, almost like it's searching for the gears sometimes. Second to third it revs up between gears like it's slipping and then goes into gear. Also third to fourth there's a chirp when going into gear under load. Does this seem normal? I just drove it from CA to MT pulling a loaded 3-car wedge. Currently has about 1,500 miles on the truck (bought it 3 days ago).

Don't sweat 2k@70, my 06 with G56 has run those RPM for years without issues. The Aisin 4.10 combination actually turns lower rpm at 75 than the G56 combo. My 08 5500 with 4.88 was 2400 at 70 for reference.

Start engine, push TH and EB. Drive and enjoy! I get ZERO flair shifts when doing so.

What is the heaviest combo you will be towing? 29k and under 3.42's are what the SAE RAM Towing guide shows.

Towing with 3.42's and 4.10's will be exactly the same mileage BUT solo the 3.42's will be MUCH better!

Yes, if you're pulling that much and frequently, the 4.10's are a good choice. As for the shifting, I notice that my 18 is rougher than my 14 was, both 4.10's and Aisin. If you hesitate while in the lower gears, 1-3, by backing off the throttle a bit too much and then get into it again I notice that sometimes it can seem confused and have a lag or a harsh shift. Normal unfortunately so you just have to get used to it and you learn to drive in a manner that avoids this. The Aisin is more than worth these glitches though for durability otherwise.
And always use the tow/haul and e-brake, empty or loaded.

Thanks for your input! About 90% of the time I'll be towing a 3-car wedge loaded. My weight across scales is usually 27k-32k. I do go over some mountain passes pretty often so I went with the 4.10's.

I've been ready to pull the trigger on an 18 with Aisin and 4.10's . If I don't like it I'll put some 19.5's on it that will help the top end out

That's kind of what I was thinking. Get some 19.5's so I'm not running as high rpm's on the top end. I'll wait until I go through these tires first though.

I have owned BOTH 3.42's and 4.10's, I towed 29k a lot with the 3.42's/68RFE, ONLY issue getting load rolling on grade the AISIN cures that.. With the loads mentioned and the fact you are NOT loaded all the time "IF" given the choice from the get go I would take the AISIN 3.42's any day. If you are NOT concerned with the cost to run the truck then take 4.10's.

To do it again now that i have the AISIN 4.10's and tow 33-35k combined I would most likely go with the 3.42's and tow in 5th. Save BIG $$$ BobTail.

I have both also, and can confirm this.^^^^

Your comprehension skills are off.....Sleeping Giant plainly stated in post #7 he would be loaded 90% of the time.

SIR PLEASE tell me where I mis stated anything. I said "With the loads mentioned and the fact you are NOT loaded all the time"

Isn't "not loaded all the time" the same as "loaded 90% of the time" ???

Who's skills are off???

Nice to see TCDiesel agrees with me, why are you not calling him out??????????

Another factor what part of the country is the majority of your driving/towing?
ND,SD,WY,UT,MT,ID,NV,AZ,TX,NM,etc?

Tire technology couple with Pressure and temp Sensors allow speed 75+ high in favorable conditions..3.73 work well and towing

I cannot figure out WHY 3.73 / 4.10 is NOT available for SRW Pickup.

If the buyer does not know how to spec out his power unit , should they be pulling Big trailers? ........at high speeds?

3.42 gearing allows for 20,520 lbs trailer weight and 29,300 lbs GCWR......which is less than the upper limit of 32,000 lbs GCWR that Sleeping Giant says he will encounter.

3.73 gearing allows for 25,020 lbs trailer weight and 33,800 lbs GCWR.

4.10 gearing allows for 30,320 lbs trailer weight and 39,100 lbs GCWR.

Unless you just want that 10% time and 3.42 gearing wag the dog......I guess you are 1,000% correct.

Technically....3.42 gearing is NOT enough based on his needs, 3.73 (those compromise gears, remember) would be just right, and 4.10 gearing gives him added growth room in the future.

Actually it is not the same.

Please provide your experience and reasoning for saving BIG $$$ bobtail.
