Putting my 2021 ram 3500 purchase on hold due to CP4 Fuel pump issues. After reading about countless problems ram owners have been having with these pumps I just can’t justify spending $70,000 with the chance of that happening to me. anybody else on the fence?

I wouldn't loose sleep over it. Less than a handful I've heard, If you can direct us to the other problems other CP4 RAM owners have been having that would be great. The 2021 will come with the new design pump if that gives you any more confidence. FCA seems to be taking care of the situation pretty well so far. I'm a guinea pig with my 19' 3500 SRW but I am not too concerned about it... I've got 11,197 miles of happy driving on the clock so far and 113,803 miles left on my MaxCare warranty. OptiLube w/ every fill up. Drive it hard unloaded and loaded, Great truck.

Glad to hear you’re not having any problems. Do you have any links to the updates i would love to read about it? When I decided to buy a new truck which I haven’t done since 2007 I started looking in to the reliability of the new trucks and was surprised to read about these pumps failing.

Thanks for your post, I will do some more research that will hopefully change my mind.

Easy for a CP3 owner to say:D
If some of you “Doubters” will start a “Go Fund Me” page and get enough down payment where my payoff is the same on a 2020 4500 or 5500 as my current 2018, I’ll happily be a guinea pig and rack up 250k miles in about 29 months :D completely disproving the theory.

Speaking of which....I hit the 250k mile mark last Wednesday, September 16th, in Bowling Green, KY.

I bought an 18 over a 19 due to the CP4, but at that point the 19 wasn’t available yet.

Since then I haven’t heard about countless CP4 issues on the 6.7 Cummins. Got any more info on those?

The early CP4 was/is absolutely a nightmare on the early models, but the pump gets updated without changing the name... similar to the change for the Cummins 6.7 CP4, which is reported as a NVH change and not a fix for countless failures.

Bottom line, where did you get your info? I’ve been skeptical of the CP4 on a Cummins since it was announced, but so far it’s been unfounded.

Beach bomb, I would not worry at all about a failed CP4 fuel pump on any Cummins engines. If I was in the market for a new truck, I would not hesitate at all in buying a 2019, 2020 or a 2021 truck. If you are that worried about the CP4 pump get the dealer to throw in a Mopar extended warranty as part of the sale. This way you will be covered to 100,000 miles.

Why am I not concerned? My wife's VW a Jetta, 2011 TDI has had the CP4 pump since new. The car is serviced per VW's maintenance schedule and it is running great!

Regarding the TDI, you are luckier that many. The original investigation of the CP4 started with the VW and was expanded to include the Ford trucks. GM could no longer stand the pain and switched to Denso pumps. Wonder why Cummins did not choose the Denso pumps, cost?

As I read the bulletin, the potential NVH complaint being addressed is for having the incorrect flash for the pump upon pump replacement. The update to the cam does not in itself appear to be NVH driven, but requires the correct flash be chosen. They aren't replacing pumps for practice.

There are not a whole lot of '19+ owners on here, for whatever reason. I have run across more than a few CP4 failure posts on other forums. I could copy/paste them on this forum, but they would likely just be dismissed as "troll posts".

You can HOPE the warranty will cover it, cannot guarantee that. Anybody can go to Vegas and get lucky, sometimes more than once, but the House will always come out on top.

Head gasket, EGR cooler, DEF system, turbo are all valid points of concern and relatively expensive fixes. Ignoring theme doesn't make them go away, a smart consumer considers them in the big picture.

I’ve been reading about several cases on other forms.
Not trying to scare anybody with the CP4 Failure but they are happening. How many maybe FCA will share that with us? Not trying to be negative I just want to make sure that the purchase I am making is not going to be regretted later. I have enough problems with the businesses I run I don’t need to purchase a $70,000 problem I have plenty of those for free.

FCA, will NEVER share failure rate along with Bosch.

"I’ve been reading about several cases on other forums"

Cut and paste them please. Out of over 300k+ 2019, 2020+ RAM CP4 trucks sold..... A dozen failures perhaps out there? 0.01% of 300k is 30 vehicles. I've only heard of 3 actual failures. Not cheerleading for the CP4 but like I said...... I would not loose sleep over it. My wife's 2014 Audi Q5 TDI has 90k miles on it's CP4.1 pump... And she fuels up where ever diesel is sold AND does not add any OptiLube or additive. I'd like to hear about more or these "failures" on the other RAM sites... Please.

Friends,

There may be more Rams in TX than ony other state based upon my observation and I've yet to see one on the side of the road. I would not hesitate to buy a '19,'20 or '21 in a heartbeat.

I could be wrong, but I doubt there are hundreds of posts about failed CP4s. I only look here and Cummins Forum.

Anyhoo, good luck figuring it out.

Ron
