I would get a cooling system pressure tested and do a coolant chemical analysis to see what is wrong.

A properly functioning cooling system doesn't use coolant.

I did when my Indy had the truck last fall November. I add1.5 quarts then. He plugged into the port it was not on the dash. Since I have been watching it and have put 1-1.5 quarts more cold. I don’t smell anti freeze at all no drips etc

What did he plug into what port?

Wait for the low coolant light to come on and take it to the dealership telling them you’ve had to add coolant already. Then when it comes on a second time they can dig into it deeper.

Look for red crusty residue around the coolant fittings and block heater.

One other thing Terry, don’t forget and leave the block heater plugged in for a day or two.

Aside from cost, why?

Countless engines live on the block heater and there are no issues caused by it on a properly working vehicle.

When we had a coolant loss issue on a truck at work (not a Cummins), the dealer did a coolant analysis and pressure test right off the bat.

By doing both, they found the issue was a head gasket leak. Pressure test came back fine, but the coolant had a small amount of combustion by products present, along with elevated levels of metal and of course the coolant proportions were NOT 50/50 anymore. They were something like 70/30 (more coolant than water) because the water was getting boiled off.

It is important to get this resolved or else you could run the risk of damage to the cooling package.

Next time it throws a code at the Indy it gets serviced in the fall November or on the dash it goes to the dealer. But right now I have the camper on and a new asphalt driveway so no place really handy to put the camper as the driveway is curing. I drove it yesterday cold it started out an inch below the full line and hot it was about a1.5 from the bottom of the cap so I’m ok and will just watch it for now. If it’s tourist season why can’t we just shoot one
