OK, wife needs a new car, we were thinking 4-runner due to reliability but she loves Jeep Cherokee, great interiors and nice AWD system. Now I am re-thinking the 4-runner, maybe the reliability is not as good as it used to be and the Cherokee is much better than they used to be. I know the older ones tend to be plagued with electrical problems. Anyone have experience with both? Never had a Jeep but had a couple of the RAM CTD trucks which we have really liked. Currently have a '97 4-runner built for the desert where we keep it and love it for that, but wouldn't be a daily driver for her at 200,000 miles. She currently has an Acura RDX. I mean it's OK, but poor visibility out the passenger side rear, and the ergonomics suck. None of the buttons or controls make sense compared to the RAM truck. Probably the Jeep Cherokee might be similar layout and controls to a RAM truck, dunno. Anyone have thoughts pro or con on the Cherokee? Probably the middle range model with Quadra-Trac 1 full time AWD. She won't need low range or locking diffs.

My wife has a 2012 GC with the Pentastar V6, just turned 170k. Overall its been great, had to replace the Trans cooler at 100k which is integrated into the AC Condenser so that was about $800 then 2 weeks ago it lost an alternator which wouldn't have been a big deal except is shorted and took out the PCM, was about another $1,000 in parts but I did the work myself. Other then that I did the Shocks / Struts and Brakes round 150k, regular servicing and it does great on snow and ice!

You got the Quadra Drive or Quadra Trac? She probably just needs the straight Quadra Drive, don't need low-range. I don't mind a few repairs after 100K miles, that is pretty normal. I think these new ones have a ZF 8 speed trans.

2012 Durango here, which ist technically identical to the GC - great Car. Turned almost 100k with very minor problems. Non of them electric/electronic related.
Wife had a Compass of the same year which was a much lower quality build, like night and day.

We had a 15 Grand Cherokee that was free of issues other than some Ecodiesel specific problems. We traded it in on the 22 CTD when the trailer got too big for the 04. My wife also has a 16 Durango R/T which has been trouble free other than a Nivomat strut failure (leaking) shortly after we bought it and a nagging check engine light for a small evap leak that I can't find.

I would purchase either one again, but would probably skip the Ecodiesel this time and go with the Pentastar or Hemi.

I believe its the Quadra Trac which I thought was the single speed full time AWD but not up to date on the Jeep systems anymore. Hers is the 5spd but the 8spd is a huge improvement!

I rented a 2020 limited GC and it was awesome... I think I would buy one over the competitors hands down if I was in the market, It also returned over 20mpg in a vareity of dive modes when we were up and down the CA coast and sierra mountains.. rarely moving slow.

I had a 2002 model with a HO V8 - l drove it for 10 years, loved the vehicle and still see many in our area.
Now have a 2012 with a Hemi. Bought used. Had issue with a fuel pump relay. It's a luxury SUV - Overland Edition.
My mother has a 2020 with the Hemi and 8 speed ZF transmission. Much nicer than our 2012 model.
The only thing that worries me is the air suspension. It works well but if it breaks it is expensive to fix. The lower trim models have a standard coil spring suspension.
