From the 2023 Owners Manual:
In ambient temperatures above 0°F (-18°C), we recommend using 10W-30 engine oil such as Mopar®, Shell Rotella and Shell
Rimula that meets the manufacturer Material Standard MS-10902 and the API CK-4 engine oil category is required. Products meet-
ing Cummins® CES 20081 may also be used. The identification of these engine oils is typically located on the back of the oil
container.
In ambient temperatures below 0°F (-18°C), we recommend using 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such as Mopar®, Shell Rotella and
Shell Rimula that meets the manufacturer Material Standard MS-10902 and the API CK-4 engine oil category is required.

Oil capacity is 12 US Quarts with filter.

I know what the manual says but what comes from the factory? 10W-30 or 5W-40. Just curious.

Last I read they are using 10w-30, which is counterintuitive… but that’s not shocking.

My OE fill lasted 1,565 miles and I did a change to be sure I had 5w-40 in the crankcase, which was good as the truck spent many nights below 0° F last winter.

Been using T6 Rotella almost 17-years. Hard to beat if it’s still on Cummins list. Zero oil used and barely opaque at 15k or one year (light duty); slightly darker, but not black if harder use & 7.5k prevails.

It’s T5 Rotella in the latest 15L Detroit. 50k mile oil change. Minnesota based truck firm. (Warranty provision). At 600k+ it barely uses a gallon by end of interval (out of 11.5-gal). We’re rarely below 78k gross.

60K OCI with same at last firm with 13L Paccar
(MHC lease).

Just go with what’s recommended.

This is not really a question any more.
1979 is a long time ago.

While color has never been a good indicator of oil quality or life remaining, it really became useless 20 years ago. The 04.5 and up engines the oil black the second it’s changed.

Modern oils are also designed to keep soot from agglomerating, so it won’t filter out like it did 20+ years ago.

Zero reasons to change your OCI based on color.

I tow a heavy 5th wheel up to 6000 miles a year and want to put in the correct oil for this engine. Most of the time my towing is in the summer and in my previous engines I used 5w-40 Amsoil. Is 5w-40 ok for extreme work in this engine?

AH64ID - so what if your operating ambient temp range was mostly on the other end of the spectrum, say, 50*F-100*F. would you still use the 5-40wt? I'm asking because I just recently sold my 2017 and got into a 2024. I was reading the owners booklet, and the oil viscosity recommendations didn't seem right. I would be inclined to use T6 5-40wt all the time even when the temps here in the southwest get over 100*F. if 10-30wt is the way to go (the engineers know WAY more than I do), I would use Rotella T6 10wt-30

5w-40 is good for all temps and conditions, while 10w-30 is only good above 0°F.

5w-40 will do better in hot and cold temperature extremes.

For some reason Ram removed this chart when they incorporated the diesel supplement into the main owners manual. It should really go back in.
