I just purchased the newest version of the Nav map for my 2021 Ram 3500. Following the directions, it directs me to start up the engine and let it run while installing the software updates and the map update. Takes about 90 minuets! In the process, I powered the truck up with out starting the engine thinking I really didn't want to run the engine that long. As one can guess, the update stopped and displayed an error code "20".

So I called the company "HELP LLC" for customer service. No Help! Pun intended! I was directed to "Uconnect". As I am on hold I am thinking to my self-----this is going to be a Dealer issue. Yep, sure enough, "we can call your local dealer and make an appointment". I politely said no thanks. Not sure if my extended warranty will cover this.

Called the local dealer and they are 17 days out for an appointment. Again, no surprise there either!!

Has anyone else had issues installing software updates and map updates? Almost feels like it is not worth the hassle!
I know.....Google Maps is free. I digress

Can you drive the truck during the update? Otherwise there may well be a "test" in the software to make sure the engine IS running. A battery failing because it's dead during a flash procedure will brick something. That is why they may require and test to see that the engine is running and charging the battery during the update. Follow the directions to the letter and try again.

I did drive while doing the update. The download started doing it's thing for about 15 minutes then stopped and the same code showed up on the screen.
Tuesday, that was good advice.
I may try it again and see if it works

Does it really take 90 Minutes for that update or is your connection just really slow?
In 90 Minutes I can download the whole planet from Google Earth and not just only a simple map update.
Did they provide you the size of the update?

The software update is downloaded from 2 USB drives. They are plugged into the USB port on the dash. One drive is for media/nav updates and another drive for the map updates.
The first software update took about 35 minutes. It stopped updating during the second update. That's when a "code 20" install failure displayed on the screen. All of this is just using 1 of 2 USB drives for installation so far.

@Herman8r, It seems that you are not alone with the error. Plenty of people an the Jeep, Hellcat forums also in the same boat! You could try doing a system reset by unhooking the batteries for a few hours, make sure you have nothing else plugged into a USB port on the truck before proceeding to try again. Since you have the 2 thumb drives, maybe a call to the dealer for some insight could help. Some of the comments seem to say that there is a software issue with the update, which to me, sounds like that could be the issue.
Found these instructions,
To update Uconnect, remove all SD cards and USB ports from your car and insert the drive. Set the ignition to Run. If you have a button starter, keep your foot off the brake and press the button twice to reach Run. A file will take a maximum of 15 minutes to upload.Feb 24, 2020
So, maybe you don't need the engine to be running, just in the run position like needed when we use AlfaOBD to make changes. I searched Uconnect software update and nav update error 20 in google to find what I did. Good luck!

@topzize, great to hear from you!
I initially did the install with the process you mentioned regarding key on engine off. I think the problem with that is the time out feature just guessing, shuts the vehicle down after a preset time
Some where around 45 minutes. Therefore the download process stopped causing an error.
When I called CS for the Map Product they said it is a "Uconnect" issue. Take it to the dealer!
I will do some more research later.
Thanks again for the help.
Time to put the boat in the water and go fishing !!

Last December I ordered the Here Uconnect/Map updates for my truck on a special they had. Experienced the same issue, error 20. After a number of emails and phone calls which all resulted in a "can't do it from the supplied USB drives...Uconnect issue"; it was recommended that I go to the dealer to update the Uconnect. I stopped by Rainier Dodge and had a quick discussion with them. They said that they had the most current Uconnect on a thumb drive. I was able to have them update on the spot while I waited. Took a while to download (not too long though). Since I didn't have the ordered Uconnect and Map update with me I popped the map update in when I got home. Supposed to have taken "up to" 45 minutes. Surprised it took less than a half hour. All was good...
Only issue: Several roads in the Map that are 50 and 55 MPH are showing as 25 MPH. Some other roads show 55 MPH when they are 25 MPH. I'm sure the MPs on Joint Base Lewis/McChord, city & town officer-friendlies, the County-Mounties, or WSP would accept me pointing out the Map said the Speed Limit was what I was doing. Sorry Officer...
The speeds were displayed in the maps correctly before the last update. Now I really hope these "speed limit violations" aren't being sent to my insurance company...;).
At least some of the newest businesses, re-routes, and traffic circles are now included in the maps.
Ah, technology at its finest...:p

@brucejohnson,
Sounds like we experienced the same issues.
My truck was at the dealer 3 weeks ago to get the no2 sensor replaced. Would have been nice if they would do updates as a courtesy.
Did the dealer charge you to update Uconnect? I have the extended warranty. I think it may be covered.
Sounds like the map update needs an update!!

As odd as this sounds.... when I buy my next truck, I'm hoping not to get navigation.

I just use my phone or paper maps. Or most of the time I'm navigating by actually reading road signs... Today's roads are marked extremely well than they were 20 years ago. I spend a ton of time on the road, and yes, I do occasionally get lost, but not for long, as I quickly figure it out. Most of the time it's me not paying close enough attention to signage.

I can't believe how many 20-30 y/os don't know what the highway markers and highway number designations mean in terms of direction. LOL

But I digress -- Didn't mean to steal the thread.

I was pleasantly surprised there was no charge for the update by my dealer. I just had the transmission dip stick recall completed a week before. I do have a good rapport with Rainier Dodge. When I asked about an update, they said they had a current version on a USB memory stick. The service rep said it takes a while to load and the truck needed to idle, and asked if I had the time. I said I did have time. He got it and plugged it in... went about his duties for a while, then checked on its progress. Once it completed, he said for me to go home and try the map update again. I did set up a HERE account previously where I received an activation code. Following the supplied instructions "carefully" I was able to succeed with the Map update...on the second try. Patience is imperative.

Took my truck to the dealer yesterday. When I arrived, I was told it would be a $165 labor charge for 1 hour to do the update. Reluctantly, I said ok. They called me up 4 hours later to tell me the radio/media center was bad. Since I had the extended warranty, the new system installed would be a $200 deductible and would only take a hour to install. The new unit would come with the new software update. I will have to install the map update ....I think. Glad I purchased the extended warranty. I don't know the cost of a new unit, but I can guess it is not cheap.

They are expensive. A lot more than a $200 deductible.

The 8.4" module is $600 and the 12" module is $1100. Not including labor at $165/hr.

The map updates are a damn headache from hell. You have to have multiple pin numbers then call or email them for more info once you start the install. Then it's 90 minutes of idling while it installs. Just use Waze or Google maps on your phone. Screw the Help people.

Waze or Google maps (BTW both are owned by Google) work well when you have data connectivity. If you're out in the boonies without data, or for when you don't want to use your mobile data, you have to plan in advance to save an offline version of the maps you will need. They work pretty well, but you won't have live traffic data, and if you take too big a detour, you may be beyond the stored map area. On the other hand, if you're out in the boonies where there is no data service there probably isn't any traffic, either.
