To your Question: The 91 is a great towing tc. When you put it in gear you will Idle at about 7mph in first, the 89 at about 5 mph. The 91 tc will attain fluid coupling at about 14 to 1500 rpm, stock is about 2k. With your 12v you should be able to get right into the peak torque almost right off idle. Towing you will have about 200rpm drop when the tc locks up, the 89 will have about 400. In od @75 unlocked I am at about 2200rpm, 2000 when it locks up and back to 2200 when it unlocks. The 89 will give approx 2400 unlocked and 2k locked. M/T there is about a 50 rpm drop at lockup.

The 89 is recomended for livestock hauling

The 91 for most towing and performance

The 93 for High performance and racing: not recommended for towing

I thought when one got maried that the new home was the "DOG HOUSE" :p

I have a 89% convertor in my 1996. I like the way it allows the motor to spool up. I installed a 91% in a similar truck and it seemed slow to accelerate. They are both Calif. trucks, Bill recommended 89%for Calif. ,with equal upgrades. The 89% on my truck will still cause the motor to lope, but not as much. You will be very happy with the upgade, it made a world of difference in the trucks we have done. Hope this helps.

DTT 93 is my favorite!

I personally went with the DTT 93% TC for my Ram after considering MY driving style, the specific application(s) for MY Ram, and MY personal seat-of-the-pants observations between it and their 91% TC.

The 91% TC is an all around better TC, exhibiting better driving manors however, I wanted to live on the edge... and I'm still glad I made the decision I did (in mid January). :D

HOWEVER, with the increased efficiency goes some idiosyncrasies; once the ATF fully warms to at least normal operating temperature (I'm using Amsoil Universal ATF+4) the downshifts when coasting up to a stop light can seem almost like someone is bumping into your rear bumper, and going into Park can get pretty nasty. I have changed the way I place my gear selector into the Park postition; I now place it in Neutral, shut off the engine and place it in Park... works much better (no noise or harsh operation). Additionally, you don't want to sit (i. e. , NOT MOVING AT ALL) IDLING in gridlock type traffic (in gear), as the trans. temps will climb pretty high unless you place it in Neutral. If you are moving AT ALL transmission temps. are reduced to unbelievable levels. So, as you can see there is no free lunch although, I wouldn't have it any other way! :D

In addition to the general DTT TC recommendations Shooter posted, Bill told me there are numerous other things to consider when properly selecting a TC, that's why DTT prepares a profile on you and your Ram based on your (hopefully) honest input. The more accurate your input, the better match they can make with their TC and custom VB.

Remember, this is not an off the rack kind of deal! :D

Awesome TC design Bill!

..... and even now after the "honeymoon" is over, I'm just as excited about my DTT TC and VB combination as the day I had it installed!

John,

I have the 91%, and I put mine in to neutral first too, Especially from reverse it can make a nasty "clunk" if you will. But i just go to N then put it in park it sounds alot better.

Jim,

I consider my 91% TC & VB the ultimate towing transmission.

I have no clunk going into R or P it is smooth as silk.

You should consider a vacation to Abbotsford for the installation

that is why my transmission shifts so smoooth

The DTT crew set these trannys up like no one else can.

*** I am not married to Bills sister, I am only a VERY satisfied

customer*** :p

Jim, seeing that you live in Moab, I'd seriously consider the 89% convertor. People that live in higher altitiudes have commented that when towing in higher altitudes, the 91% is too much ,and the 89% makes starting off easier. Therefore, they like it better in altitudes. specially on a more stock truck.

I go to Moab every Easter for the Safari, and this year, I was towing 2 trucks on a 24ft gooseneck(about 10K), and the transmission worked fine. Starting off just took a second or two longer than normal to get boost up. Nothing that a new Piers turbo can't help, with its faster spoolup. Read my sig, you'll see what I mean.

Warning......long post...................

I had to make the same decision 2 months ago. I was so disgusted with the inefficient non-performing stock converter that I contemplated taking it to the scrap yard just for the satisfaction of seeing it crushed flat. (I think that might be why there is a core charge. )

There was no way I was going to invest a whole weekend swapping out torque converters unless the performance improvement was well worth the money AND my own sweat equity. This was my mind set when I called DTT: I wanted the biggest, meanest, tightest, toughest converter they had. 93% or bust. I owned a strong running BOMBed truck and only the "best" would do. 93% Period. 93% YesSirree Bob. Case Closed. Well... ... ... when I called DTT... ... .....

Bill K. himself answered the phone. I told him what I wanted. He proceeded to ask me some detailed questions about my truck modifications and what I wanted to do with it. This information was used to complete a personalized "profile". When the profile was finally complete, he assured me that his 91% TC would be perfect for my application. Do What???? 91% ??? ... . Do we have a bad connection ??? I thought I heard you say 91%. Isn't that the the TC made for the little Girlieboys ??? Man, I was Crushed. I mean, I just KNEW before I called that Bill was going to "DEMAND" that I purchase the 93%. I felt as if I had failed to obtain fully certified "BOMBer" status. Ego check... . OUCH !!!!!! (Honey give me the Amex card - quick- I need Propane and Nitrous... . )

Well, I installed my 91% DTT converter 6 weeks ago, and Mr. Bill was absolutely correct. The 91% has been a Perfect match for my level of power, and more importantly, for towing my travel trailer. (8500 lbs. ) The difference between the DTT and stock is unbelievable. I have rather exhaustively researched the entire transmission upgrade debate, and I am convinced that my DTT purchase decision was a wise and sound one.

My main motivation of sharing this (hopefully humourous) story is to inform other members contemplating a TC upgrade that you won't be sorry. No buyer's remorse here. I should have done this upgrade first. Have FUN... :) :) I sure do.

Thanks for all the input! I know I am going to go the DTT route, and I knew bill would taylor just what I need... but I wanted opinions and what ppl thought of the diff TC's..... any one know right off hand how many miles it is from salt lake city to Bills place?? I dont have time to look it up or I would do it my self! ... ... Jim

boy oh boy jim...

My Rand McNally trip maker says 967 miles each way and no I will not convert that to kilometers ;)

We are on our way to Abbotsford tomorrow morning 149 miles from Auburn, Wa ;)
