In my quest to make my truck more driveable, i'm considering swapping in a 215 pump. Will it be too much for the 160 injectors? If i modify the 215 fuel plate will it then be too much for them? If i do swap in injectors, is it worth it to step into 215s or should i step up to something bigger? What will it take to get 350 hp if i swap in a 215 pump? I don't want something smokey, looking for more clean power with better fuel economy than stock.

Thanks,

Matt

A stock 215 hp injection pump will work OK with 160 hp injectors, but somewhat larger injectors, like those belonging to the 215 hp engine, may give better economy and definitely will give more power. If you put in a performance torque plate, go to bigger injectors than the 160s. The 215 hp injectors and a TST #10 torque plate will give 350 hp with a bigger turbine housing on the HX35, but also smoke a lot unless you carefully adjust the AFC. You might consider 370 hp marine injectors with the #11 plate for better smoke control and somewhat less torque for manual clutch or automatic transmission longevity.

My transmission was built this summer so i don't expect to have any problems there. Most folks say the Marine 370 injectors will smoke more heavily than others. I've been talking to a diesel mechanic who doesn't like to go with anything bigger than Bosch 230 injectors. He says going bigger will yield lower fuel economy and more smoke due mostly to incorrect spray patterns, regardless of who built the injectors.

After chatting it over with a handful of folks, i think i will keep my turbo stock and likely choose DDP stage 3 injectors with the plate in the 215 pump probably slid all the way back. Most are saying i should be able to control EGTs and smoke that way. A bigger turbo later on should let me slide the plate forward and realize how much power is there.

Most of my driving is stop and go below 35 mph so i figure i'd like the smaller stock housing best for now. I live in Colorado and will sometimes get into the mountains. I wiil have water injection which will hopefully keep EGTs cooler at altitude. Trying to maintain a low budget but set myself up for 500 hp down the road. 350 hp would be nice for now. Anyone have advice or opinions on this pump/injector/turbo setup?
