What is your engine and transmission technique for towing?

Peterbilt Doonan 335

Finally made the switch from my crappy stocker (225/75/15D) tires and wheels to some 245/75/16E... the new wheels are ALCOA's and the tires are PROSPECTOR truck wheels with road hazardOo. With the stock wheels and tires they looked like they had to much weight on them and like they where always struggling. New wheels and tires look like they are meant to be under the trailer and go down the road with ease. Take a look. The first one is kind of hard to see I took it last night when the light wasn't so good. What do you think? Makes my trailer site more level with my truck.

They look good and seem to fill the wheel well pretty good. I expect you have plenty of clearance.

SILLY QUESTION:

Why are all the 5wheel travel trailers so high off the ground. Do the manufacturers assume that owners will go over rough grounds - off road??

The box on my GN is 8 feet high but the floor is much, much closer to the road. I bet manufacturers don't expect cargo haulers to go over rough campgrounds. It just seems to me that travel trailers are top heavy and must be less stable than similar sized cargo trailers.

I think that they are higher now because the bed rails on new trucks a lot higher then they used to be. My trailer came from the factory with a spring over. Mine doesn't feel top heavy at all.

With a 5th wheel, 6" bed rail clearance is a practical minimum with 8" to 9" preferred. Unfortunately, with today's trucks, the bed rails are pretty tall - at 6" bed rail clearance, my 5th wheel (see signature) is level to slightly nose high with my truck, and it's a 2WD! This can be a real problem for the 4x4 folks. :(
