What's the procedure for fuel priming when the 24 valve is run completely out of fuel?

The reason I ask is... . the company I work for leased a self-propelled sprayer which is powered by a 275 hp 24 valve. This afternoon, the operator ran it completely dry. After adding fuel, he called the equipment dealer and followed their instructions to "just keep cranking till it starts". When this failed, he called me cause I've driven a Dodge Cummins since 95. My 12 valve priming experience wasn't worth much though. What the... . , no hand primer??

Long story short, farmer ingenuity won! (I might even admit how, sometime. )

Just would like to know how it's supposed to be done.

well our 24V has a liftpump to help prime the system.

What I do (after changing the filter) is this

1-turn the key to the on position.

2-Just "bump" the key to the start position, but not enough cranking to let the truck start, then return to the run position.

This lets the lift pump run for about 30 seconds.

3-Do this about 10-15 times, then start the truck.

4-If it don't start, repeat above.

5-If it still don't start, replace liftpump.

But this thing your talking about may not have a electric lift pump.

Loosen a couple injector lines at the injectors, just a turn or two at most and crank engine until it starts then tighten injector lines.

When I ran mine out I had to bleed the lines to the pump and then bleed 3 injector lines to get it started.

Farmer injenuity=gas soaked rag, ether, etc?

fuel priming

Thanks for the input,

I had tried all the above suggestions(except the gas-soaked rag and ether).

The difference in this machine's set-up from what you've described is that the lift pump only has a 3 second cycle when the key is turned on. We must have tried that 50 times, but it wasn't enough time to draw fuel.

I called Cummins Engine, and after being on hold for 15 minutes on my cell phone, got to talk to a rep. First thing he asked was if I had the manual and and a special tool/override module ??? in my hand. If not, he said that he wasn't even allowed to talk to me!! He was actually very helpful, though, in explaining just what had to happen to get the thing primed. He also admitted that those lift pumps are a problem.

Our fix was to hot-wire the lift pump, using the tools at hand: jumper cables hooked directly to the battery on one end and on the other clamped on two screwdrivers to reach in and make contact with the tiny pins in the pump pigtail. One slip and we'd have had fireworks! It still took a long time, the pump must be weak, but it did start!! All in a days work!

I wasn't suggesting those as good ideas, simply what I envisioned as possible "farmer injenuity". :D
