Hi. . My Name is Paul and I am new to TDR so please excuse me if I don't do this right. . I have a 1998. 5 24 valve with 310,000 miles on it... . I have been having trouble with it acting like it is running out of fuel above 2600 RPm. . It will cut out and smoke like crazy... It doesn't always act the same... Some times it will do it around 2500 RPM and some times not till 2900 RPM... It is also hard to start after the Fuel Filter is changed. . Most times have to tow it... I have changed the lift or transfer pump as some call it and it is putting up 15 psi. . The codes that come up on the computer are: turbo boost too high and fuel pump timing. . (not exact words). . I have a boost gauge and it will go as high as 21 PSI if it is working right but normally cause it starts cutting out I only get 18 or 19 PSI. . I have a 10 spd Road Ranger in this truck , so I don't have to run it that high in RPM all the time so I am able to get a long with it... It puls reasonably well up to 2600 RPM...

Any body had or having this experience, please help... :confused:http://paulspickuptrucking.freeservers.com/

like your web page.....

I can't really help you out on your problem, and I have never heard of anybody with a problem like this before. But I would love to know more about this... .

1998 Dodge Ram 3500, 5. 9 Cummins Diesel, 10 Spd Roadranger transmission.
Sounds like a smooth setup.  :D

This is just a wild guess but with the boost and fuel issue I have to wonder if the MAP sensor has gone bad or is starting to fail. With that many miles on your truck it would not suprize me if it is failing.

Bill

Hey Bill... Thanks for the reply. . I have been wondering about sensors... . I can make it smoke and carry on just by holding throttle down when not moving and when it gets up to 2600 or so it just starts acting up... I don't think it is a fuel supply problem. . Something is changing or not changing the timing. .

Thanks Again... ... ... . Paul

My 2001 did exactly the same thing. Above 2600 RPMs, it would cut out in little spurts. I did not see smoke, as you described, but I had gauges then in my otherwise unmodified truck, and I did notice that my peak boost numbers matched yours. Instead of the 20 or 21 I was used to, it would be a max of 18. Also, my peak EGTs on a wide open throttle run were down a couple hundred degrees. And finally, when I changed my fuel filter, thinking this might be the cause, I had a much more difficult time getting the thing primed and running again compared to previous filter changes.

The answer? LIFT PUMP.

I was fortunate enough to still be under warrantee (I think mine went out at just under 30K miles), so Dodge did it for me.

Your's is a 98 - I don't know if it holds true for your truck as much as mine, but if you search this forum on "Lift Pump", I think you'll see you're in good company!

Good luck -

JimD

I couldn't resist....

Preuber,

300,000+ miles on a 98. 5!:--)

That's some serious driving! Just curious, what (if any) problems have you had with your truck since you bought it besides the current problem? Also, what have you had to replace on it?

Gotta love that Cummins!:D :D

Thanks for the help JIMD... I already replaced the lift pump and it didn't fix it. . !!!!

DEZLPWR... I was in my third clutch at 153000 Km (95000MI) and my transmission sycronizers were going and fifth gear had gone... So that is when I put the 10Spd RoadRanger in it with a 14" Clutch... . At 500,000 Km (310,000 MI) I haven't touched that part of it again. . !!!!! Oo.

I have done the starter a couple of times (Cause we had to change it when we put the different Bell housing on to hook up the 10Spd) and the rear end twice... Carrier once and crown & Pinion Once... . Front pads every 80000 Km and Rotors twice... Rear brake shoes once... . Replaced Lift pump twice and that is about it. . never touched transfer case yet. . !!! Touch Wood. .

Hope that answers your questions... .

Wish I could figure this problem out... Other than That it has been good... .

Paul

Sounds like maybe the injection pump is going out...

The original VP44 is still on this truck after 310,000 hard miles... Anyone else think it is also the VP44 going??? The "hard start after a fuel filter change" has me wondering since the lift pump is apparently healthy.

Just trying to rack my pea brain...

I know you tested the new lift pump and got 15 psi, but it is always possible that you got a bad new pump that works fine at idle but does not put out at load. It would not be the first time I have heard of a bad out of the box pump.....

JR2

We had a pressure gauge taped to the windshield as we drove down the road... . Pressure stayed good... ... .....

Thanks... ... ... Paul

I don't know about you guys but that 10 speed roadranger & 14" clutch installation sounds like a GREAT article for the TDR!Oo. Oo. Oo.

I'd love to hear more about this swap..... especially since it's a 4x4... it would be easy to put just about any transmission behind the Cummins if I had a 2wd truck.

Does Advance Adapters make a 10-sp. Roadranger to NP241 adapter plate and or input shaft? :D

Matt

Sorry Paul, but it sounds like your VP44 is going... . quite a few have bit the dust with the exact symptoms your describing. Especially with the fault code your mentioned. Hope I'm wrong!

Thats what I am afraid of jjdiesel... If it didn't pull so good up to 2600 Rpm, I would think the same thing... But this truck will act up and smoke (Blue) just sitting still and holding foot down... Shouldn't take much fuel then. . ???. . Another thing I shoul mention is, if we unhook battery which I think resets Computer, It will work ok for a while. . !!!!!!!!!!!

Any body think it has anything to do with the turbo showing an high boost code. . ??????????

Hey, Give us some more info on how you hooked up the 10 speed to the transfer case. My NV4500 is about shot and I really hate to put money back into something that won't last.

Pops or bangs?

It just cuts out and smokes like crazy? No other noises? I was almost thinking valve timing, but I dont know if that is even possible. I am not a guessing man. Welcome aboard, this is a great place to hang out.

The 99 (see sig) does the same thing every once in a while. I normaly see about 27PSI until it does this and then boost drops to around23PSI:mad: It only seems to do it when the temp is below 40, which is most of the year and the elevation is above about 6000FT. The bad thing is most of my driving is closer to 7000FT:eek:. If I go down to lower elevation or warmer temps it runs strong all the way to redline :D

Preuber,

Could you post or send me some pictures of your 10 spd transmission. It sounds just like idea I had, but have never followed through on. I use to haul dirt with my EDP (end dump & pup trailer AKA as a dump truck)and miss my 13 spd sometimes. Do you strait stick it once in motion? My EDP Big Cam III 400 was BOMB'D quite a bit. I could straight stick my 13 spd and jump every other gear unloaded. Boy would it fly! Any info would be great!
