From a friend of mine, TDR member, but not on the board.

"... ..... my wife took my daughter's

horses down into Ky. to sell it at this big auction. On the way down all the rear end bearings went out of my wife's full size Bronco. We 'wern't the only ones who 'broke'. Two Duramaxes blowed up, one was just TWO days old! The other one had fifty or sixty thousand on it. Two Super Dutys lost their

auto trannys. We lost the rear end,

***and a Dodge lost the dowell pin. He

kept on driving. Everytime the oil light came on he would stop, dump in a bunch of oil and keep on going. He said it was his front seal. I told him about the dowell pin, but he said that he would trade it off. It was a 24 valve. ****"

Think the dealer will disclose that info to the next buyer??

It's my understanding that at some point in 1998 Cummins changed the design of the front gear housing so that the dowel is trapped and cannot work its way out. The problem seems to be that you can't be sure which gear housing you have.
