I think that's my T case - not the HD one - man was that a mistake that hey made them without the HD one... ... anyway - I have some slop and wuth 250,000 I think I need a rebuild or a new one. My mechanic hasn't rebuilt one - what should i do - can the chain simply be replaced or what is involved? Recommendations and $$$$$

With that many miles I would look at getting a new or rebuild transfer case. A stretched chain will only cause play to the front drive line. Is that what you are getting?

As TJ said putting a 271 in is a very good option especially on the later 2nd gens. I put one in mine, and I have no regrets. The main difference in the Ford 271 and the dodge one is there isn't a slip joint for the rear drive line on the Ford. I got one from Transfer Case Express and they set it up so that it has the same shift pattern as the 241, and modified it to have a flange rear drive shaft. Before you put another 241 in you truck you should give them a call. There is also a thread on here about doing the swap. At the time I did mine a rebuilt 271 was cheaper then a 241DHD.

Yes it is. Some people notch the frame just a little for clearance but I did not. I also used Transfer case express. They had good service.

I had to clearance the skid plate under the transfer case. I had a fixed flange put on the output shaft, instead of the slip joint, so I had to modify the drive shaft. The linkage for the 4x4 shift lever will have to be modified, but it's a no brainer once you look at it.

As a side note, though it doesn't pertain to your truck. The older pickups used a speed sensor in the output section of the transfer case to run the speedometer. The newer ones use the speed sensor in the rear diff. If you have a speed sensor in the output section of the transfer case, there isn't a place for one in the 271 transfer case. I have heard that there are some electronic options to run the speedometer, but I don't know anything more about it. It wasn't an issue on mine.
