I am thinking about trading for a newer truck. What are some things to check on a 24v before buying? I know the lift pumps are famous for failing but is there any easy way to check them?

I found a truck for a pretty good price but high miles. (280k)

Is this excessive, I know 12v can go up to a million in certain cases. I have a 12v with 152,000 but I want a quad cab and a little more room. Is it worth the extra miles or should I look for a 24v with lower miles. Thanks for any help.

You did not say what year it is. Each year has a different way to check fuel pressure-98. 5's and 99's have 2 1/8" fittings on top of the filter canister that you can attach a hose with pressure gauge on and test there. 2000's -well you have to get an answer from one of the guys that has one of them. Lift pumps take out the vp44 (injector pump) seems to be the biggest problem. If you can get repair (fluid chages, fliter changes, etc. ) records and the owner has taken care of the truck and the price is right why not?:D

Like Bill said, if the truck has had reg maintenance, the high miles would be no problem.

I've been reading everything I can on this subject and it seems the 24v's are racking up the miles as trouble free as the 12v's... except for the lift pump issue. They pull like a pit bull between 2,000 and 3,200--so if you like winding it out, there you go. Some have said the 98. 5's have had a few teething problems related to the first-year of that style injection.

Another thing to keep in mind, depending on how much you can spend, is the 01. 5 and 02 models have rear wheel disc brakes. The word is they stop GREAT compared to earlier years... a conversion is possible on earlier years, though.
