All,
I've got a 01' 24V/ 6sp 3500 4X4 with about 258,000. Runs great, starts great and pulls like a horse. 275inj w/edge comp and ispro gauges. Lately I've noticed a relatively sizeable amount of engine oil directly under the oil pan when I park it in the shop. In fact the pool of oil is growing with use. I checked it out last time I changed the oil and noticed the entire drivers side of the undercarraige is coated with what I'm pretty sure is engine oil. It appears to me that the oil is originating from the slot at the bottom of the alluminum bell housing. I'm also notincing this oil is covering the majority of the transfer case, transmission and running down the oil pan near the oil plug. So far oil consumption is not been a real issue, however the last time I went to change my oil I thought it was a little low. Are these symptoms consistent with a failed or failing rear main seal????? I've near done that job yet on this particular model so before I tore it all apart I thought I might ask someone who has? If so what all should I expect, I presume the entire transfer case and transmission have to come down. Also is there anything I should look at and or replace while I have the beast torn down??? Any info would help, thanks JCH. :-laf
