Hey all, I have a 24 valve motor(99). In an 69 chevy. Just got it all done and on the road! So far every thing works great. Just had a few questions for those that have been down this road. Is it possible to read codes directly from the cummins ECM, since I don't have a PCM wired up? Also how can you tell if your computer has set any codes since I obviously don't have a check engine light. I remember when I was going through the wiring there was 2 wires out of the ECM that were called Data link + and data link-. I still have these wires labeled and could access them without to much trouble. I appreciate any help with this computer controlled stuff! Thanks Lowell

you will have to go to someone with the capability of reading that computer, on that year cummins a data port should be directly on the computer on the engine block - any cummins dealer, service center (or dodge) dealer has that scanner - that is the only way you are going to see the codes and i suspect you will have some. that ecm is going to be looking for all the data it got from the dodge and if you didn't use all those sensors you will get codes, which most won't be important.

those two data link wires are to make a remote wiring harness port to plug into the scanner- you would need the connector.

no data port on my ecm. I do have the original plug that was under the dash of the dodge. Iwas under the impression that plug went to the dodge pcm which in turn recieved codes from the cummins ecm? I do have the pcm out of the dodge I guess I could tackle wiring that back ingto the system if that is what it will take to be able to get any codes. thanx

You can back door the Cummins ECM, but you'll need the Cummins dealer's scanner to do it. The connectors leading from the ECM block into the Dodge harness are made to unplug so you can connect up there. Few of the dodge dealers have any clue what to do if they're not hooked into the port in the dash, Not to mention they'll be blind without a VIN code from the vehicle it came from. Dodge has turned nearly all their service as well their parts over to VIN# reference programs. One of the modernization "improvements" they have undergone.

The system that Chrysler has developed has made it so you have to either go them, or an actual Cummins dealer with full factory support to work on the 24valves as equipped in the dodges. A 12 valve conversion on your engine would be less frustration than the issues you'll deal with trying to hook up the Dodge harness in its entirety.

My main concern would be what to do if the engine shuts itself down and you can't find a cummins dealer with the backdoor software and connetors :(
