2500 4x4 gvwr

what is the reason the 2500 4x4 gvwr is less than the 2500 4x2? what is needed to increase the the gvw safely? Thanks for the help!

Both of them have a GVWR of 8,800, but since the 4X4 weighs more, with the front axle, driveshaft & transfer case, it has a lower gross cargo weight rating compared to the 2wd.

Maby I am just thick in the head, but my book say something like the 4x4 has a combined rating of 16000 lbs. and the 4x2 has a rating 18000 lbs. I would asume that means the 4x2 and total load is more .

For 2001 model year 2500s, GVWR = 8,800 lbs, GCWR = 20,000 lbs. 4x4 or 4x2 is irrelevant. Since a base 4x4 weighs more, it can haul less cargo and/or trailer.

If your 2500's book/sticker has different numbers than 8,800 or 20,000, then welcome to the "2000 my numbers are wrong" club.

GVWR=Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(the empty truck plus its payload)

GCWR=Gross Combined Weight Rating(the truck, its payload, & whatever you're pulling behind)

The way I read my 2001 sales brochure, any 2500 with either version of the Cummins has a GCWR of 20,000 pounds.

In past years the automatic transmission had a lesser GCWR—16,000 pounds if my memory is correct.

DonS is right. Model year 2000 saw many 2500 Rams w/standard transmissions receiving bogus GCWR numbers from DC. After many calls to the DC 800 number and many hours on hold a number of TDR members were able to get letters from DC changing their GCWR on non-A/T 2500's from 16,000 to 20,000 pounds.

Yes older yearsit depends on engine, transmission and gear ratio to determine the GCVW. For example 97 was this. Same for a 4x2 as 4x4. Same for Std cab or club cab, etc.

Diesel 3. 54 Automatic = 16,000
Diesel 4. 10 Manual = 18,000
V10 4. 10 Manual = 19,000

OK guys I guess if I have learned anything from my first enquirey, it is to give complete information and pertinant info. My truck is a `97 club cab 4x4 with 356 gears. The way I read the book the the gross combined weight of the truck and trailer can be 16000lbs. and a 4x2 can be 18000 lbs? why the difference. THanks JIM

I don't know what the actual weight of a 2X4 is, but I just had to have mine weighed (2500 4X4) and it weighed in at 6760 with a full tank of gas. The info that came with the truck claims that the dry weight is 6750. I assume that dry weight is without gas, so something is wrong with their info. Just for comparison, does anyone have their actual weight for a 2X4?

Not trying to confuse anyone even more,but my Dad's new 2001 3500 2wd auto with 4. 10's has a 19,000GCWR according to the window sticker. I feel the window sticker is more reliable than the owners manual. My 96 2500 auto 3. 54 had a 16000GCWR.

Ok, I'm looking at my 1998 owner's manual right now: Quad Cab and Reg Cab models have identical numbers.

2500 4x2 Reg Cab 5spd (3. 54/4. 10) = 20,000 lbs
2500 4x2 Reg Cab Auto (3. 54) = 16,000 lbs
2500 4x2 Reg Cab Auto (4. 10) = 18,000 lbs
2500 4x4 Reg Cab 5spd (3. 54) = 16,000 lbs
2500 4x4 Reg Cab 5spd (4. 10) = 18,000 lbs

So, why the difference? The brakes are the same between the two vehicles, tires, wheels, etc. What is different? The TRANSFER CASE! The 4x2 doesn't have that one extra shaft to break.

While it might not make the "official" GCVW of the 4x4's higher, I think swapping in a stouter case would allow 4x4's to reach that 20,000 lbs mark without worry. No, an NP205 is not strong enough! There is an article in the latest 4 Wheel & Off Road talking about cases. I'd like to drop a NV271 into my Ram! This is the case the Stuper Dooties use.

Scott, you should modify the post to include what engine those ratings are for. I bet the 20,000 with 3. 54/4. 10 5sp is for the V10 and not the diesels. The diesels are the next 4 lines. Observe the 4x4 and 4x2 have the same ratings.

Whats the difference is, is the gear set. Both manual or auto with 4. 10 is rated for 18,000 and both trannys with 3. 54 are rated for 16,000.

FYI... Not like I am a pherd fan or anything. But F450 and F550 can have a 26,000 GCVW rating. But only with the 6sp and 4. 88 gears. With 3. 73 and 4. 10, even the F550 is only rated for 20,000.

My '95 2wd/auto/3. 54's weighs in at 5720#s,and is rated for 16,000#s CGVWR.

My '00 4wd/6spd/3. 54's weighs in at 7340#s,and is rated for 20,000#s CGVWR.

Both were weighed on a certified scale with full tanks and the same person driving.

The window sticker on my 01 2500, 4x4 with 4. 10 and auto says GCWR is 18,000. Payload is 2290 and Trailer Weight is 11,350.

What happened to the above people that sent letters? did they get their ratings changed? RAYJ check this out, mine is a 01 2500 3. 54 5spd tow and camper prep, GCWR is 16000, payload 2,370, trl. weight 9,400. (GVWR still 8800). I seem to see alot of discrepensies. There must be a reason, right?
(Smokin Joe' is just like mine with a GCWR of 20,000)? info? Is it S. J. s LWB?
