What's your pin weight? I suspect you'd be exceeding your rear GAWR and certainly your GVWR (not a big concern however).

My trailer is a lot lighter than yours (around 8000 dry) and the coils are great, but you are likely in 3500 territory with that trailer so it may not matter if it has coils or not....if you are exceeding GAWR.

With the pin weight of a trailer that size, a 2500 will be overloaded before you even get in it.......

Yup, Too much fifth wheel for that truck . Whats the 12K dry or loaded ? I tow just over13K with a 3500, and would not want to go any heavier with a SRW 3500, no way with a 2500.

I would have no issue towing a 12K 5er with a 2500 and no issue 14K with a 3500 as long as they are 13 and newer SRW's. 14K at 20% pin is 2,800# at 25% it's 3,750# That is where you will start hitting RAWR and tire limits.

I have had no sway issues nor anything to make me feel like coils are a compromise.

Is there something I'm missing? Are coils known for swaying with a load? I cannot figure how this could be an issue.

One of the advantages of the coils is that it allows the shocks to be located further outboard, thus allowing them to be more efficient at controlling bounce and I suppose sway.....if it were an issue. My guess is that the 5-link set up locates the axle well enough that it will not sway the way you are envisioning.

I have pulled a 14k gooseneck, with no problem, no sway and no bouncing, like I had with my 3500 srw. The truck stays level too, so it has just the right amount of TW

I don't think you will have any issues. 5th wheel trailers aren't prone to sway like a travel trailer and sway is really more of a trailer loading and tire type and pressure thing. My 5th scales at around 13500 pounds and my equipment trailer and gear scales at 25000 pounds at times. #ad

I realize that I'm speaking about my experience with a leaf spring truck in my previous post but have hauled these trailers with both coils and leaf suspension . #ad

Thanks Mud chucker is that a 2500 I figured it would be fine was just curious what everybody thought you do helical piles in California I do them on Long Island

2016 RAM 2500 Big horn 6.7L with coils & pulls a 5th wheel, curb weight 8890lbs, haven't checked weight loaded, probably between 9700 - 10k & no sway - just came 1300 mi. In 10/15 mph winds.

Is that 12k the loaded weight? Keep in mind it's pretty easy to load up another couple thousand pounds, water, propane, batteries, and beer alone are around a thousand pounds.

I agree the trailer could be pushing limits on the truck...maybe it's 9700 empty and 12,000 loaded which might fit your numbers. All other things being equal I'd tow on coils ahead of leafs...no more sway but better ride.
