Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a 2500 Megacab 4x4 w/6. 7 vs. a 3500 Megacab 4x4 w/6. 7?

I'm trying to home in on which model to buy...

Thanks,

Andy

Welcome to TDR! If it's the same as the previous years, overload springs and cab lights on te 3500, and not on the 3/4. Other than that, virtually identical...

Sorry for the double post, tried to edit for bad spelling...

There is no good reason to not get the 3500 IMO. You gain some load capacity with the 3500 and likely a little better resale. One other difference is that the 2500 gets a Hemi standard the 3500 gets the Cummins standard, not that it matters since you are getting the right powerplant anyway.

When did that start? I've seen a few duallies around here with Hemi badges. I can't help but shake my head every time I see one.

The difference between 2500 and 3500 is -1000. I know I'm being bad, I just couldn't help it.

Seriously, for the small difference in cost, I'd get the 3500 for it's better GVWR.

I don't know why, but some guys don't like the cab lights... . with the 2500 you can order with or without, with the 3500, you don't have the choice, you have to get them. FWIW

Starting in 2006 the cab lights are an OPTION on the 3500 SRW, the DRW always gets them by law due to the width of the dually

It started with the Mega Cab in 2006, and as far as I know only applies to Mega's, the other body styles can have the Hemi in a 3500.

more springs

i have a 2500. well i should have ordered the 3500. it cost me 275$ and 4 hours to put one ton springs in!!! kp

I did the same thinking and if I remember correctly the difference in invoice $ was only 500 or 600... I opted for the 3500 SRW without the cab lights. :D

The 3500 might be a little more money for your annual registration. In California they charge more for the higher GVWR. Check on your Insurance rates as well.

Get the 3500 !

AGardner..... you didn't specify if you were seeking a 3500 SRW or 3500 DRW. I previously owned a 2000 RAM 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 CTD SWB w/Camper Special group. With the limited towing I towed, I never experienced any excessive "squat" in the rear end. In 2003, I purchased a RAM 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 CTD SWB. That thing pulled great, but "squatted" much much more than my 2000. For that reason, I opted for the 3500 SRW (with cab lights :-laf ). I've towed three times with it, have zero squat, and the 160. 5" wheelbase gives it a quality ride both unloaded and towing.

Just my $0. 02 worth.

The only difference in a new truck is the overloads on a 3500.

If you are concerned with what the sticker says, get the 3500. If you are concerned with how the truck pulls a load, get the 2500, add airbags for $200, and be better off with the heavy loads than a 3500

thats what i did. Works great, i ditched the overload and gaot a mini pack for the ride quality and air bags for when i tow. Best of both worlds

Insurance will be higher

231Jasons is correct: insurance costs more for a 3500 because the industry considers 1-ton trucks commercial and/or farm vehicles that get abused a lot. Half-ton (2500) trucks are thought of more as personal transportation, back and forth to the grocery store, church on Sunday, etc. I know, it makes no sense. Why can't they just ask us what we use the truck for?
