Does this size do O. K. for towing? Any blowouts? I'm getting new tires next week and this is want I want(285's also) but I have to wait to get 8" wheels to get the 285's. I'll be getting an all-terrain in 255,any reccomendations? Thanks(pictures, please)

Steve, I've been asking the same question, and not that its a huge problem, but you can't seem to get a 255/85 in an E rated tire.

It is the primary reason I am looking at keeping the 235/85 on my dually.

I have 255's on my 2500. They are 33. 5" tall and about 1/2" narrower than the old stock tires. I noticed a drop in RPM's on highway. I can't tell you how they tow as (believe it or not) I've never towed or really haulled much. They even fit with running boards. I think the MPG's went down due to:

1) really aggressive tread. For some reason they seem to be wearing twice as fast on the rear.

2) less gearing from a stop. My commute has a lot of stop and go traffic.

All in all, I like the tires and always get compliments on how they look. It fills the wheel wells nicely. I can send you a pict.

True, but a 235/85-16E tire is rated for 3042lbs. The rubbing together on a set of duals is only a problem in the pre 2000 trucks.

One other noteworty word about the 255's is that they are NOT reccommended for wheels less than 6. 5" in width, which would make them not really intended for use on stock (or common aftermarket) dually rims.

Is there a 255/85 E rated tire made? Even though they will carry the load my 255/85's feel soft and baloonie. Mine are D rated, I think the ratio of highth to width is not suitable for D rating, too much sidewall.

AKDrifter- What brand tires do you have? I had D rated 265/75's (mud/snow) on my last truck and felt the same way. Just a bit too soft and spongy when I had the wieght in it.

To my knowledge there is no manufacturer currently making a 255/85 LT16 E tire. :( And like I mentioned- in a Dually application, the minimum rim width reccomended for a 255 tire is 6. 5"- so technically the dually rims won't saddle one up- although I know there are members running them.

AKDrifter,

Is there a lot of sidewall flex with your 255/85-16 tires I guess I mean is it very noticable when turning and things like that. Are they wearing good? Also which Kelly Safari's are you running exactly I am looking at getting a set of them but I am having trouble finding pictures of what they look like on trucks, if you happen to have a picture could you post it so we can all see?

Thanks,

Doug

I have 255-85-16 BFG Mud-Terrain T/A's on the Ford. Have had NO handling problems with it at all. I've even had a 2500# pallet of seed beans in the bed. The truck was squatting pretty good even w/fac. overloads. They carried the weight very nicely. The tread holds up well. Have about 15K+ on them and they still look like new.

I ran the Kelly MSR tire in that size for a few years. I felt that I had too many of them {3}getting trashed due to unknown road hazards.

I went to the Dunlop RV rover. It is a little bit shorter and wider than the Kelly. The Kelly has a more aggressive tread and is studdable.

They fit up in the stock spare tire bay.

BFG Mud Terrain

I have the BFG M/T's on my 2500, and they are fine. A 3,000# "D" rated tire. I just towed my 5er about 2,500 miles, and they worked fine. Handling problems are nonexistant. I know one guy on here that has them dualled. Weight capacity in a dual capacity is 2,755#'s. That's over 11,000 #'s total capacity in the rear.

:--)

How much more do you need?

I wish BFG made the tire size in their all terrains. I don't need as an aggressive tire as the M/T, but I like them. MPG is down, and noise is up. I can even hear the tires above my 4" exhaust. I don't mind, tho.

I run two sets of LT255/85R16s on my truck and have never had a problem with failures. In the summer I run Dunlop ATs on some Mickey Thompson 7" rims and BFG MT kms on my stock wheel in the winter. I have run Big O ATs(didn't care for them hard rubber(no traction) and yet they wear very fast 19K), GoodYear AT (not agressive enough for our winters and not made any more 27K) and the BFGs are just great for traction but they wouldn't last very long. I really like the Dunlops I have had them for 12K right now and they will probibly run ~30K.

Towing isn't a problem with the 255/85R16 and I like them alot off the road. I also wish I could find some load range Es they would probibly wear alittle better. I am going to try some Cooper next.

Has anyone heard of "Peerless Tires"? A local shop mentioned them but I've never heard of the brand before. They are a little less expensive than the Kellys and are available in 255/85-16.

Thanks.
