What tire pressures are best with the bfgoodrich 255/85r16 mud terrain tires? I just got a set and ran them at 55 front, 50 rear initially. High speed lane changes were a bit squirrily. Otherwise the ride was OK. I can already hear the front end thanking me as the steering feels much lighter and easier to turn compared to the 285/75's I had on previously. Off road grip is incredible! No more getting stuck on grass! Will increasing tire pressure help with street performance?

I would suggest you go to Michael's craft stores and in the section where they sell model airplane engines. Get one of the IR temperature guages. About $25 or so.

Run the tires until they are warm. Stop and take temp readings on the center and the edges of the tread. should be the same all across the tread. If not, adjust the air pressure.

I'd try adding 10 to 15lbs to the fronts. That should tighten things up a bit. Those tall sidewalls need need all the help they can get.

I don't have BFG's but on my Kelly 255/85's I run 50 in the front and 46 in the back (unloaded). One way to find the right pressure for tire wear is to use chalk and draw lines across the tread. Go for a ride (maybe 1 mile +\-) and look if the tread is left either in the center (under inflated) or sides (over inflated). My Kelly MSR's seemed to have a stiffer sidewall than the ASR's that I have on the front now. Soooo, I know what you mean by "wandering"... Hey, it keeps the Hondas in the slow lane paying attention!

I'm with y-knot here, 65 in the front and 40-45 in the rear but that's because it's a dually. Probably would run 50 or so on a single rear wheel.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I took a 200 mile drive today with the tires at 65 front, 60 rear. The ride was harsh, but not unsafe. Parts of the Long Island Expressway (495) look like the Buhrma Road these days. The BQE and downtown Brooklyn are no better. Cornering and turning were better, but upon inspecting the treads afterward, I could see I was only running on the two center lugs, on the rear. The fronts were a little better, but not making full contact. I dropped the fronts to 60 and the rears to 55. I'll have to see how this compromise works out.

My speedo is now off by 5% vs. 3. 8% with the 285/75's I had on before(verified by GPS). I got 19. 3 mpg on the trip which is 1-2 better than i've been getting lately. Driving was mixed city/hiway. Average speed was 45 mph(GPS). Maybe slightly taller tire combined with 1 inch narrower tread made this possible.

Any other thoughts or comments on this tire/size would be appreciated. Next big test will be the ocean dunes on Saturday. I'll keep you posted.
