Hope this isn't a bad omen, I've had this thing a week, have 256 miles on it, check engine light is on, (code p 0191), and while putting my mudflaps on last night, I noticed a small puddle of oil underneath, see below. It's coming from the bellhousing area. Any ideas?#ad

When I first got my truck I freaked out about the same oil leak.

It turned out to be the idiot who changed my oil spilled oil on the head, and the oil ran down and collected at the bottom of the bellhousing. It probably happened when they were prepping your truck.

Keep an eye on it, but it is probably not a leak.

I don't know what the code means, but do a search on this forum and you'll find a list of codes.

I would take it in and have it checked out. Could be as simple as the valve cover leaking in the back of the engine. Is it still stock?

mberry, I'm dropping it off this afternoon. No it is no longer stock, I've added mudguards and Catch-All floor mats :-laf :-laf :-laf .

Please let us know what it was when you get it back from the shop. Also had my '05 Ram a little over a week now. It has less than 500 miles and I hope I don't ever see oil other than inside my motor :D

Best of Luck and nice choice of truck.

My 02 has been in twice for leaks. The one was the front of the trans leaking and the second was between the trans and transfer case. Well its been leaking at the trans again for a while now. I need to call to see if its covered under the power train warranty. I have the NV5600. Jeff

My new 05 drips like you describe I found it was coming from the vent tube on the top of the valve cover, the factoty tells they are not supposed to leak there but the dealer says that this is normal, I guess I will see what the tell you, please let me know if you get any further info.

Mine did the same thing when new (<500 miles). Turned out to be the oil filler cap wasn't screwed on correctly, or so the dealer told me. I didn't believe it either but the oil leak stopped after they correctly tightened the cap. When it happened, I didn't bother to open the hood and check for leaks as I automatically thought it was the rear main seal and that is not my problem with a brand new truck so to the dealer it went. Now with ~30k miles she's bone dry!

Well, got it back Friday, oil leak was the a/c compressor mounting bolts, they put dye in the system and checked it with a black light. Appears to be fixed at this point. Check engine light was caused by a faulty fuel rail sensor, the second '05 they've seen with that problem. Apparently they can't just go to the parts counter and order, they have to call STAR, they have them do a series of checks to see if any mods have been done to the engine. After the bombs are ruled out, they give them some special order #. Service manager said people frequently remove fueling boxes etc before bringing them in, but that doesn't make them undetectable. I told him the nerve of some people :-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf

Well I've got 3k on it now and took 5ver on vacation last week. Pulling large hills on the NYS Thruway and the clutch would slip like crazy. Got to our destination, went to local dealer, trans oil was down almost 2 qts. When I got home, called dealer, they removed trans, input shaft oil seal was never installed.

I have an 05 6 speed that has leaked oil from day one, my dealer told me 6 months ago that they just leak, WHAT? I have got 14k on the truck now and I just put in syn in the motor and it leaks more than ever, just took a 100 mile trip today and when I got home I noticed my tail gate had oil all over it, looked under the truck and sure enough I had oil everywhere!!! took the truck to my local dealer asap and tried to get the truck in, I am a business link member and should have got the first open bay, but the service mang made me feel like I was wasting his time,,, what a load of crap. They had no loaner car so I had to take the truck home. I have looked everywhere for the leak and It looks like a rear main seal but from what I have read, I guess that it could be coming from lots of places. I am so mad right now that I don't know what to do, I was wondering if anyone knows a good dealer/service man in the northern Colorado area???? thanks for any help fella's

Pleas give me any Ideas that you might have.

If it's the rear main seal the color of the fluid leaking should be dark like your engine oil is (before you changed it), after 3k miles, it was easy to identify it as not being engine oil because it was not dirty. The trans being two qts low confirmed that. The first three times I was back I had the same issues, they did things like repositioning the vent tube, thread sealed bolts etc, and said they all leak a little. But every time a parked in my driveway with the truck facing down hill, it would leak a cup of oil on the ground. The problem is there is no inspection cover on the bell housing, so the only way to check it is to split the engine and trans.

I am pleased with the repair and the dealership now. I've had four of these trucks and this is the first one that's been back for anything defective.

I would try and identify what's leaking, and one of the two fluid levels should be low.

Matt
