I need new tires.

I've run 265/75 and 235/85's so far. I liked them both.

My wife is pushing my back towards the 265's because they look much "beefier" than the 235's - so beefier it will be.

While I ws in looking at a new set of Michelin 265/75's I saw a set of 285/75's and WOW, they look great! A bit taller and wider tire than the 265's.

Will the 285's fit my truck (8" rims) without mods?

Who else has run on 285/75's and what did you like or dislike about them?

BTW: I get in some tough spots off road, but do most of my driving on the highway and around town.

Thanks

I ran 285/75/16 bfg at's for about 80k miles (2 sets) and they were fine both on and off road. I had them on stock 6. 5" wheels. I recently got a set of H2 wheels and tires - 315/70/17 bfg at's and they fit and work great. They look very very good! And the best part, they were only $650 total - shipping and all! - Cheaper then a new set of 285's.

I'm on my 4th set of 285/75s and about to be on my 5th. I can't tell much, if any, difference towing with the bigger tires, but they will exaggerate any slack you have in your steering. It can be tough to find a load range E tire in a 285 so I just use Ds and haven't had any problems.

My truck suspension is the stock 4x4 and the tires fit fine. A leveling kit would make it look a little better though.

... are your factory rims 16" diameter - or the newer 17"?

... what make of tire? and how many miles are you getting out of them?

... tell me more!

What make of tire, where'd ya get them, etc. ?

I ran 285/75-16 BFG AT's and liked them a lot. The D load range in this size tire is rated to carry more weight than an E range 245/75-16 which is what came stock on my truck. I got a good deal on some used Rickson 19. 5's about a year ago and don't plan to go back. Otherwise I'd still be on the 285/75-16's.

The tread depth on the 285/75 Michelin's is significantly less (shallower) than on the 265/75's.

I got 65K miles on my first set of 265/75/16 Michelin LTX AT's. And, I'd really like a tire that would get me at least 50k or so.

My last set of Dayton Timberline AT 235/85's are completely shot at 22K miles! Ii won't be making that mistake again.

Thanks

16" diameter rims. See Reader's Rigs photo.

I am running my long time favorite tires. Cooper Discoverer S/T.

http://www.coopertires.com/us/en/ProductDetails.asp?ProdType=LtTruck&id=190

I have been running S/T tires for years on a few different trucks. These have been wearing very well. I have 12,000 miles on them and there is a lot of tread left. And keep in mind that I don't drive nice. My throttle might as well be a toggle switch - either floored or not floored. I have owned multiple sets of these aggressive tires, and I will own more. I have been nothing short of thrilled with their performance, wear, and traction for such an aggressive tread. For the work I do, I need traction. :)

So, for miles expected out of them? I should easily get 35,000 mile on these tires before I decide to replace them. I usually replace tires before most people. If I get down to a 1/4 inch of tread, I am ready for new rubber.

These are basically 35 inch tires. They are the largest size that can fit on factory rims and meet the specified requirement for rim width by Cooper. My truck clears them with light rubbing on the upper track bar only at full lock of the steering wheel. A lot of guys will tell you that they tried 315 rubber and it rubbed everything. I think that my truck clears these tires because I have a HD 2500 with the camper and plow prep packages. Without the plow packages, and on a normal 2500, things may be more prone to rubbing. The HD 2500 trucks came with Dana 80 rear ends and all the same running gear as the 3500 trucks, minus the duallys. Normal 2500 trucks have a Dana 70 rear end and lighter springs. At least, that's how I understand it.

As much as I love how these 35" tires look on the truck, I think I will drop back to 265 rubber (same Cooper Discoverer S/T) for my next set. I have decided this for cost, safety, and towing reasons. The 315 rubber, while they have the same load rating in pounds as the 265 E rated tires, have a lot more sidewall flex, and are only D rated. I tow a lot of different trailers for work and personal use, including a 35 foot gooseneck horse trailer. I have noticed that, under heavy load, the sidewall flex of these tall tires hinders handling, therefore sacrificing safety, and sanity. Also, getting this already tall truck under that gooseneck is a challenge enough without extra tall tires. So, I'll be stepping back down to stock, 265 75 16 E rated rubber to get back to the stability and towing performance I need. If I was just hauling firewood and groceries and commuting with this truck, I'd keep 315s under it. But what I've gained in looks I've lost in stability and performance while under heavy loads. In fact, empty, the truck with 315s rides much nicer than it did stock. Oh well.

Is that enough info for ya? :)

Most certainly. Good info to consider/know. Thank you!!

My truck is a standard 8800# 2500 4x4. I do not have a plow package or overload springs.

I'm still a bit worried about going all the way up to 35"ers.

Any more success stories with the 285/75/16's????

Thanks

I'm sorry. I'm only on my thrid set of 285s right now, my fourth set of tires overall. My first 285s were Bridgestone Dueler M/Ts. They looked good and drove well but only lasted about 22k miles. They started humming at around 18k miles and got worse unilt I replaced them with Cooper Discoverer A/Ts. These are easily the best set of tires I have owned. They lasted almost 35k miles and I never had a problem with them. I will probably be buying some more before long. Right now I have some Pathfinder ATR tires on my truck. They have about 25k miles on them and they are wore out. These tires feel like jello. When I turn the truck I can feel the back end shift like the sidewalls are flexing a lot. They also exagerate my loose steering more than any other tire.

I am running 285s also. I did the 4 for 3 deal through 4 Wheel Parts. They are Pro Comp All Terrains. They look good but are still a bit small for the look I am after. They fit on my stock 6. 5 inch wheels. It would be better to use an 8 inch so the tire runs a little flatter and wears more evenly.

I have 305/70-16 (33x12. 50) Nittos, they are a little wider than 285's. I got mine when the truck was stock height and they did not rub. But every truck is different. I think the 305's look a lot better than 285's because of width. I do have stock rims.

I'm running the Michelin LTX 285/75/16s on 8" rims with no problems so far in 5K miles. Got them at Costco. Very smooth ride and they balanced out with very little weight. Load range D works for my uses as I don't haul big loads or trailers.

I swapped the factory tires after a couple hundred miles in favor of a set of 285/75 BFG AT's. I've had no problems with them. They have thrown up a few rocks and may have contributed to sloppy steering, but I didn't use the stockers long enough to really get a good comparison. I have 30K on them now and could drive on them for a few thousand more, but I'm planning to add a 2 inch spacer kit and go with the 315 Goodyear MTR soon. My brother is giving me two of these, otherwise I would stay with BFG.

I had the MT/Rs also but in 265. I bet they would look killer in 315. Mine wore fast but those were highway miles on mud tires.

JDixon, when you get those on take a pic for me!

No problem. It will be a month from now, maybe more. I did find another member with a picture of them. I don't know if the link will work, but the the member is listed as "athompson".

The picture is hard to see - but you can tell how much the tires fill in the wheel well. It looks really good! Thanks.
