271 or 273

Is there any easy way to know which transfer case a truck has... the 271 or 273? Without slithering around on the ground underneath, that is... Were specific packages or options matched to specific transfer cases?

Yea, I think the 273 is electric auto shift and the 271 has a shift lever on the floor. My mega cab has the 273 and a dash knob.

There is a round silver/red tag on the back of the case that is stamped with the type of case it is. Look uner your truck, to the left of where the driveline comes out.

Is there anything else that is different? I have a re-built 271 case that is going into the '98 soon and they look identical, aside from the elec. shift mechanism.
