Aftermarket Intake manifold or OEM?

<!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message -->ok, so some people have done this... but garrett had an auto transmission, and the BigBadDodge had an NV4500... has anyone done this with a 5600???

My transmission comes back real soon, and im trying to upgrade to the 271... but i dunno if that big case will fit behind the huge transmission... and without a 271 to test fit and measure its hard to see if it will fit

03-05+ trucks came with a 5600 and a 271 (or 273) so it should be no problem with stock parts. You will need a 271 output shaft yoke for the rear shaft and I'm not sure about the front. The drop distance on the 271 is larger than your original transfer case, but you probably already knew that.

Mine fit just fine.

TJ,

Thanks, anything special about the swap... other then having new d-shafts made what else is there to worry about. Any modifications to the cross member to clear the front drive shaft?

Thanks,
The other TJ

The only thing I recall you have to mess with is the linkage.

how about driveshafts... is the 271 the same length? i really havent checked, just assumed. if its the same length i dont see why i couldnt get the slip yoke and just mount that to my current driveshaft. what about front DS? Did you just swap or did you have custom shafts made?

If you buy the case from transfer case express they can elminate the slip yoke and make it a bolt on flange. That is what I did and most others are doing. If you do that then you will need the rear d. s. changed and I think my front one fit ok.

yea i was able to measure a 271 today. looks like the rear DS has to be about 1. 5" shorter depending on what slip yoke or flange you use etc. and the front looks like the stocker will work

Sooo, does the front one work? and does the 241 shift setup bolt right to the 271?

Who has the best details on this particular route?

Muchsnow, the fornt driveshaft should be lengthened an 1 1/2". I didnt yet but I will. the rear driveshaft will need to be shortened and you will need to pick up a 3rd gen yoke, new larger u joint, have it balanced. The transfer case will clear the frame barely, like the thickness of a piece of paper. Linkage hooks right up, just check and adjust as required. Make sure you take the plastic bushing out of your 241 where the linkage connects and transfer to the new transfer case. The 271 shifts in and out of 4x much smoother. Enjoy, Sam.

I haven't kept up with much the last few years do to some health problems. What's the difference between the 241 and 271?

I did this mod 5 years ago in an 00' Club Cab. My front drive shaft remains stock, the rear driveshaft was replaced (converted to yoke, upgraded u-joint and balanced) and is 1. 5" shorter than stock. The transfer case cleared the frame barely, as stated above, like the thickness of a piece of paper on each side. Linkage hooked right up, just checked and adjusted to fit. I did a dynatrac free-spin kit at the same time and left the dashboard 4X4 and Transfer Case dummy lights disabled.
