285/70/17 E load tires

I've done some looking on the internet and asked my local tire shop but can't seem to find that tire. I'm wanting to go up a size to the 285 in an A/T tire. I was looking at the Toyo Open Country, but they are a D rated tire. I thought I had read on here that some were running an E rated 285. I don't want an aggressive tread as most of my driving is highway. And I don't want to go bigger than the 285 because I've read it will hurt my mileage. I don't tow often so a D tire would probably work fine, but I've heard that a D tire can be a little "squishy".

What brand of tires are you guys running in a 285 E.

Hi Randy,

I'm running a Toyo 285 E rated. I checked their website continuously and they only showed the D rated. A couple tire shops didn't want to be bothered to look up or call Toyo. I found them at Les Schwab. They are indeed E rated and are great tires so far. I've got about 10k on them. They are slightly taller, but the speedo is only off a couple mph. Hope this helps.

I went with 285 BFGs. They are D rated. I have not noticed anything "squishy" about them. I have around 15k on them, and am happy with them.

Thanks for the reply. I am waiting for those tires from a buddy of mine. They have been on national backorder for a while--but he says any week now!! :{

I don't understand the number load rating system. What numbers equal an E tire? What weights equal an E tire?

The 285/70/17 Toyos are E rated A/T's. Nobody seemed to have them or had even heard about them. Les Schwab said they could get 400+ at the time, which was a couple months ago. I'm sure they'd ship to you. I got 75k out of my BFG's, and have had 6 sets of BFG's on various vehicles. But I like the Toyos much better. Glad the BFG's weren't in stock otherwise I never would have searched for the Toyos.

Seems to me Toyo should get there act together on what kind of tires they sell. Nobody seems to know much about their e rated tires around here either. There is no telling how much business they have lost.

TPUIG, what do you like so much better about the Toyos? My BFG AT's are just about done... and I'm on the fence on which one to go with. But I see you don't commute in snow or ice... I'm in Reno.

I also have 285 BFG TA Ko's... . 60 psi front... 50 psi rear... unloaded @ handles SOLID... when I'm pulling my trailer... I bump the pressures to 65 F/R



right from the BFG web site... .



stock 265 E rated rugged trail TA's service rating of 121 load rated to 3195 lbs



285 D's (AT's) have a service rating of 121 and a load rating of 3195 lbs plus they have a 3 ply side wall... . PLUS ROWL look better IMHO... BJ

I have had the BFGs on several trucks and love them, except for the fact that they are really bad about slinging rocks into the truck. :{ Are the Toyos any better in that aspect?

I have a buddy that has 295s in the Nitro. He HATES them. has about 20k, and it's time for him to replace - no tread left.

I like the look of the nitto's, but I'd heard that the mileage was horrible.

I've got enough tread left to last the summer, just hoping that the toyo's come in by then.
