I am just interested in knowing how many members purchased 2nd Gen 24valve new and still have their trucks, and their thoughts regarding their trucks. Thanks very much 6naline01

Bought my 99 new and its now about 130K. Retired from active duty a few years ago. Now enjoys purely hotrod, play truck status. Still goes on 5 hour road trips for surf fishing and some light work chores now and again. No major problems besides what I have done to it. Steering box and fuel filter assy replaced under warranty at about 30K. I disconnected the rear wheel ABS at about 90K(stops well now, rear is a bit touchy in the rain). Towed 20K with it regularly, hauled hay, tractors, equipment, logs, block, etc...

I swapped in power leather seats, did the power towing mirror conversion(3rd gen mirrors) and added heat to them. The only things the factory missed in my opinion. After wiping out a NV4500 I now have a 5600 and am in the process of getting all the parts together to put in a built auto. The 4500 is the best stick made in my opinion. It was a mistake to swap it.

Now it has aftermarket bumpers, nerf bars, every thing that can be done to the engine without pulling it has been done(grill and intercooler have been out... ), 7 inches of lift, 4. 30 gears and a Detroit in the rear, 37 in rubber.

I bought my 99 new on Dec. 30 1998, and it has been the best vehicle i have ever owned. I have had some of the typical issues. I replaced two stock lift pumps before putting in a Glacier pump, i replaced the stock clutch at 154 k miles because it didn't like my Edge juice and injectors. My stock VP lasted 194K before i replaced it with one from Midwest Diesel. Maybe that sounds like alot of trouble, but at 206K ,i still really enjoy driving this truck. RandyOo. Oo.

I bought my 02 new a week after 9/11. I love this truck. Ive had to replace the LP and the IP. But, other than that, now other real problems. I just turned over 75k.

If I had it to do over again though, I would have bought a truck with a manual trans. But, my TT is only about 4k lbs, and the truck handles it nicely. I can pull my TT over Snoqualmie Pass at 70mph. (although I keep it down to about 55 when Im pulling). When Im pulling my TT up pretty steep grades, I can easily accellarate. I can even pass cars on the hills.

Of course, when Im not pulling my TT, the auto is awfully nice.

bought my 2000 in Jan 2000. Its got 157k on it now. other than a transmission and some rust around the wheel wells, its been a great truck.

I bought my '02 3500 in August 2002 in Maryland with 2 miles on it. Swapped a '00 2500 in for it. Swapped injectors, exhaust, gauges bumpers, side bars on backlot of dealership. Started on a Wed, drove off w/ 3500 on Sat, drove to Indiana for TDR Ralley towing my 17K lb Travel Supreme. It's not my pri tow vehicle anymore, so thinking about installing stacks, bigger tires in the future. 127K miles.

Took delivery of a 1998. 5 in April of 1998. Had originally ordered a 12v, the salesman quit and my order was delayed enough to get one of the first 400 24v units out of SL. Has served me well for 125k with minor power/transmission upgrades. I think what could've been if things happened a month earlier. My ISB is solid as I could ever ask for. Oil samples show me. it's running well. I enjoy the security of a dependable motor over anything else. Best money I've ever spent.

My 98. 5 has 517,000kms (321,000k) 4 lp ,1 apps, 1 alternator, 1 starter. It has a 53 block, original vp-44,original injectors, original transmission, original rear end. all the accesories on the engine except those listed. Replaced 4 sets of michilin tires, rear brakes 2 times, front pads and rotors 4 times, exhaust system to 4in. s. s. Engine always run on rotella 15/40 , # 2 diesel, added mmo. and howes meaner every tank. Still has original lower ball joints, and tie rod ends. It has been a great truck never refused to start, never been towed, love the 2wd ride and low to ground. never expierenced the problems of the 4x4 trucks like death wobble. happy camper.

Bought my 2wd 3500 in Jan 01 and currently have 130k miles. This truck was purchased to tow our 5th wheel that weighs a little over 12k lbs. About half the miles accumulated are towing and we travel cross country each year to visit family. Besides oil & filters the only problem has been monitoring the fuel pressure and relacing lift pumps(3), so I went with a fass ddrp. At 87k mi I replaced the torque converter and valve body with Suncoast products before I had any possible transmission problems.

The paint is still glossy, body is surprisingly solid for a quad cab, leather is good, heated seats work, overhead computer and all electronics work as new.

Second set of brake pads and shocks are all thats been done to the suspension. I knew this would be my last truck and has turned out to be one of St Louis's best.

99 24v

Picked it up in July 1999. Quad cab, manual trans, vinyl floor, roll down windows... . you know... . a truck :)... 138,000+ miles. Replaced pinion seals, T-case output seal, wheel seals, ball joints, tie rods, shocks, steering stabilizer at about 80K. Replaced lift pump, injector pump and starter plunger after that and front axle shift actuator last weekend. Brakes, batteries and tires too, but that's all.

We had our first baby this summer and my wife wants a crew cab w/running boards. I always told myself if Dodge came out with a real crew cab long bed with the Cummins, I'd pick one up... . then they did..... then I looked at the fuel consumption... then I looked at the price... ... . sure do like my current truck!!! Best I've ever had and I can fit it in our garage.

But a new truck might be nice... ... but the purchase price isn't and having to buy more fuel isn't, and it won't fit in the garage.

I don't know... .

Picked up my 01. 5 in December of 2000 new. now it has 245k on it. Fuel system pumps I've gone through several vp44's and several lift pumps. Rebuilt the front end ball joints etc at 186k, rebuilt transfer case at 189k. Rebuilt the transmission with a DTT at 110k however my transmission was not shot at that point just wanted to do it on my time instead of its time in the middle of nowhere. Other than that normal wear tear stuff brakes, tires, battereis (got 7 years on the stockers).

Outside of the fuel pumps I have no complaints about this vehicle at all.

Bought my 99 new in August of 99. I have 80,000 miles and have zero desire to get a new truck. Changed two lift pumps and now have the DDRP from FASS. I have run the Blue Chip FMS since year 2000, never turn it off and have the dreaded 53 block. This truck pulls my fiver beautifully delivering 11-13 mpg depending on conditions. It just has been and continues to be a fantastic truck.

Picked up my truck in November 2000 when it arrived. Had 2 lift pumps replaced on warranty and installed a FASS this past summer. It hasn't missed a beat and I have done what is in my signature before any failures.

My greatest Regret? Road Armor Bumpers! If you want to know, PM me.

Bought my truck new with 13 miles on it July 2000. Have went through 3 OEM LP's before putting in the Air Dog. I have about 150,000+ on the ticker now. All problems to date have been minor and am very happy with the truck. Mod's have been made more to aide in 5er pulling or for convenience sake or to dress up the truck. I am very happy with the truck and think I will be into the future.

I missed this the first round, so I'll give my perspective of my 2nd gen '02 and list the problems I've had:

The 2nd Gen body style is the coolest looking Dodge Ram but my '02 has had the most problems of any vehicle I ever owned. Still love it though.

1. Replace two rear seals transfer case - under warranty

2. Replace transfer case; burnt up - under warranty

-- mechanic who replaced two seals fired for not replacing fluid when replacing t-case seals.

3. Replace injection pump and lift pump - under warranty

4. Replace rear axle pinion seal - my dime

5. Replace rear axle yoke - split cost w/ dealer for botched pinion seal job

6. Replace valve on A/C - my dime

I love this truck.

Mine turns 10 in May next year, currently 245k on the odometer. Best truck I have ever had, I would drive it anywhere.

1) 1-VP44

2) 2 - L. P's

3) 1-Clutch

4) Front end rebuild

5) 1 - APPS

6) 1- water pump

7) on the second set of batteries currently

8) 1 rear hub seal

And the usual routine stuff.

Factory ordered and delivered on 12/2000. Like most, 2 Lp's, 1 VP44, a little steering wander and only a couple minor problems. After 9 years I still love her looks and comfort not to mention the power she makes on demand. With the price of a new truck this one will be around for a long time.
