A thought just popped into my mind. I hear a lot of 2nd Gen 12v truckers say they don't like 24v trucks because of "too much electronics". That's what I hear from you guys about 2nd gens in general.

How much different is the 1st gen from the 2nd gen 12v in terms of electronics?

i. e: how much less reliable are the 2nd Gens?

The 12v 2nd. gen is still mechanical as far as the engine is concerned. No electronics control the engine except for the cruise which is independant of the engine controls. Still very reliable and have the better P7100 fuel injection pump (which is also lubed by oil, unlike many other pumps that rely solely on fuel).

5.9 Electric Gagets

I have a fleet of busses here with the 5. 9 This is how I became involved with this engine. There is little difference between the 1989-97 engine in terms of reliability and electric gizmo's. These are my bead and butter engines:). Now as the ISB is concerned, well thats a different story. One small piece of electronics decides to go south, the bus is grounded. Lots of trouble with the transfer pump mostly. That's not saying these engines arn't reliable. They are. It's simply a fact that everything has to be just so in order to start/run, where as the 12v dosn't give a darn about reverence signals and the like.

Bottom line, if the electrical connections which supply power to the computer/fuel pump contain the least amount of corrosion,,,,,,,,she won't run. If the right sensor fails to deliver, you'r up the creek.

My truck had a problem with a sensor. My crank shaft position sensor went out and it shut off my alternator about 200 miles from home. My truck had to come back on a trailer.

What is an ISB?
