2nd Gen Paint / Hail fix dilemma

I own a Blue (severe paint loss, despite always garaged)) 96 12-valve, ~270K miles, bought new, never a major repair. Incurred hail damage recently & Ins Co est. = $2500, body shop est. = $4500. Body shop says “start work on truck (grill off, etc,) they then contact Ins Co & can get Ins Co to agree on repair cost”. How big a bet is this? Can’t afford to trade on a new rig now! All suggestions much appreciated.

I think I would be getting back on the phone and raising some hell with the ins. company. They have 2 options: Either (1) fix your truck or (2) total it and give you the market value. (assuming your policy covers weather damage) Generally they will choose the first option if the damage is less than 80% of the value of the vehicle. I would not take the truck in for repair until they agree to do one or the other in fear of getting stuck with the balance of the bill.

Fairly std. , including $500-deductible on comprehensive, collision...

If it is not full coverage you may want to dig your policy out and see what they have to say about weather related damage... .

I don't quite understand the partial repair bill, either it should be covered, or it isn't?? In other words, either repair it, or if the damage exceeds the value, total it... .

I have read where DRY ICE will help remove or minimize hail damage. Do a search on it, might save some money out of your pocket.

(I know strange things do strange things. Who thought that SHAVING CREAM would remove grease smudges from carpet. Read it and tried it. It worked. )

I dug into policy, didn't find a weather-related exclusion. Next step = jump on ins co. Will keep you posted

They most likely plan on doing another segment or complete work order for "Supplemental Damages" or "Unforseen Damages". That may be what they are referring to.
