Howdy 2nd gen'rs. I've decided to sell my 3rd gen and get a 24v 2nd gen. Every time I hear a 2nd gen CTD drive by I turn green with envy. I know it's not the most rational reason to choose a truck, but hey, people buy Harley's because of their sound, right :D Beside, we have a family car now so I don't need 4 doors on my truck anymore. I want a 6 speed 4x4 w/ limited slip rear end. I'll probably end up plowing with it, so I figure a short box is a good idea. Those are about my only requirements. I know about lift pump issues with 2nd gen CTDs. What other things do I need to look out for?

Thanks,

-john

Hey if you like that diesel sound so much, skip the 24V and go with a 12V, no lift pump problems ! I simply love the clacking and clanging of the 12V's.

I'd have to agree. If you're going to step back to an older year, find a nice 12 valve.

Hard to beat a 6 spd, though. And if he gets a '01. 5 or '02 he'll get the rear disk brakes. Personally, if I get another 2nd gen it'll be an '01 or '02 HO 6spd.

As far as what to watch out for, There have been some issues with the #53 block. I would stay away from the 94-95 years, they had several startup issues, new models always do. There is the issue of the KDP, it applies to all the 12V's, look for leaks in the front timing cover. And if you buy one make sure you take care of it pronto, before any gages. The fix is easy, it took me less then 45 minuets to do and I'm slow. I would buy a vacuum gage and take it with me when I test drive anything, just plug it into the connector on the drivers side firewall, it will tell you the condition of the pump, and HVAC controls. Look under the truck for not only leaks, but signs of abuse, rock damage, excessive mud, etc. If it's a automatic, assume it needs a rebuild, especially it the previous owner towed with it. Pull the transmission dip stick and smell the fluid, it should not smell burned and should be bright red. Check to make sure the CAD or central axle disconnect system is working right, also check the transfer case and it's operation. Look the suspension over, are the shocks leaking? Is there oil on the differential housing, both in the center and at the ends? Look under the carpet, is it wet? Pull the radiator cap and check , is it bright green? any oil? Look at the AFC housing, have the 4 screws been removed or tapered with? feel the throttle cable, is it frayed? they have a problem with that. Do all the dash warning lights lite ? anything stay on? Get a car fax report.

Dave said it... rear disk brakes and 6 speed are the reasons I'm not after a 12v. The #53 block is a 12v only issue, right? Thanks for the input!

Hey Johnstra, I tip my hat to you. Conventional wisdom would argue against going from a 3rd gen to a 2nd gen, but I hear you. Good luck in your search.

26272 as it sits tonight. Hey, as much I like 2nd gens I don't imagine I'll go for an even trade. I'll see what I can get for it. Mine's practically new... just broken in, almost 10k miles of factory warranty left, and w/ Buckstops on the front and back... if Dodge weren't offering such good rebates on '04s I think I'd have sold it by now.
